UPDATE: Initial lineup -- no Paul Simon or McCartney -- is now posted here.
In case you haven't heard, everyone's favorite fearless freaks of the festival circuit, The Flaming Lips, will perform Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in a late-night set at Bonnaroo 2010. This according to Lips frontman -- and Raffi of indie-rock -- Wayne Coyne, who yesterday revealed his bands intentions to Spinner, claiming:
...we're gonna do it at Bonnaroo at the midnight slot, the first night... We do a Flaming Lips set then starting about 2:30 we do this 'Dark Side of the Moon' thing. In that sense, it's perfect for that. It lets you play a little bit longer... We did it at the New Year's Eve show just knowing everybody's gonna be taking acid, staying awake until five in the morning. We might as well just be jamming on some freak-out music.
Coyne is, of course, referring the their recent New Year's Eve show where they covered the classic album for the first time.
In other Bonnaroo news, it has also been reported that Paul Simon will appear among the festival's headliners. No word yet on whether or not he'll cover Piper at the Gates of Dawn (fingers crossed). According to Glide Magazine, it is now speculated that another legendary Paul will appear as well, and they don't mean Paul Rodgers. Sir McCartney headlined Coachella last year, and he's one legacy artist I'd really like to check off my list, so let's hope such rumors aren't erroneous. Perhaps he'll cover Eddie and the Cruisers' "On the Dark Side."
The full Bonnaroo lineup is due to be announced throughout the day next Tuesday. We here at the Cream will do our best to keep you abreast of other 'roo-mored performers as they trickle in. (If you're an insider, but not "insider," please feel free to comment, anonymously if need be, with any hot goss.) My money's still on The Arcade Fire, and my hopes for Neil Young making an appearance are through the roof.
One act you can all count on not playing Bonnaroo is Fall Out Boy. Making the case for the existence of a God, the band has reportedly called it quits. Woo-fucking-hoo.

While I have no problems with the Flaming Lips or Dark Side of the Moon, there is just not enough weed in the world for me to give a fuck about a combination of the two.
And if the previews I heard off iTunes are any indication... Shit meet sandwich.
I heard the recording of the last concert and wasn't impressed. I like the Easy Dub Allstar's version.
Give credit where credit is due Gold. "On the Dark Side" came from the genius that is John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band. ha!
Of course, like any Springsteen fan, I know that John Cafferty was the voice behind the legendary Eddie Wilson, but Eddie and the Cruisers is a better joke than John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band...actually, maybe not.
Dooood...nothing's funnier than Beaver in a band name!
I don't know, I think Bizkit trumps Beaver on the laugh-o-meter.
as one who LOVES dark side of the moon AND the flaming lips, i think their take on this most classic of classic rock archetypes is pretty dang impressive. they totally re-invent the album and don't play any of the songs straight. it's more like a weird, fucked up flaming lips record than a reverent cover or anything. and i have it on pretty solid "insider" authority that the 'lips version will be pressed on high-grade vinyl for a limited release on record store day, april 17. that ought to squash those "itunes previews" like a grape. seriously, people make actual buying decisions off of those shitty samples?
Yep. Late night + The Flaming Lips + Dark Side of the Moon = lots of fun
I agree, Doyle. They did their own fucked up renditions, and you can tell they had a lot of fun doing it. I love it, glad it'll be on vinyl.
But I'll say I've been having a ball reading people's negative reactions to it all over the interweb. I was amazed at how much some people hate it, I love that and I'm pretty sure they do too.
wow i don't think i could give one fuck less about this
"seriously, people make actual buying decisions off of those shitty samples?"
That and bitorrents.
I saw them play this album @ New Year's in Oklahoma City... some of have had the Wayne Coyne "twist" added to 'em, but others are spot on to the original. The played a solid set, and together with their psychedelic stage antics, it was by far the best show I've ever been to. I'll probably be out in the lawn trippin' BALLS during this set (assuming it's actually happening... wouldn't we all feel stupid as shit if he was really just bullshitting all of us?!)
I have heard the DSOTM CD that Flaming Lips/Stardeath and the white dwarves put out recently. I am a huge floyd fan. They remade it in a unique way. Henry Rollings sings all over it. It is a fun rendition that is totally different from the original IMHO.
This is Bonnaroo...do you think TFL will play DSOTM alone?????
