Hipbilly Jamboree Not Returning to WRVU

As Maloney told you the other day, Doyle "D-Funk" Davis has retired from WRVU, electing not to accept the slot he was offered at the station and thus ending a 15-year run of funkifying the Nashville airwaves. On the heels of that bad news comes the equally bad news that this past week's episode of the venerable country show Hipbilly Jamboree was its last. We're told that while the show was approved to continue, every time slot requested by hosts Randy Fox and Kels Koch was denied. Apparently the only times they did get offered were either late at night or early in the morning -- times they aren't able to do the show. If something as banal as a scheduling conflict seems to you like an awfully lame reason for a long-running show (it's been on since 1997) as good as Hipbilly Jamboree to disappear from Nashville radio, then you're paying attention. And you know what's at stake. There was some grumbling about town that the erosion of community DJs from the station was continuing in kind, but that doesn't seem to be the case -- at least not entirely. The show Needles + Pins, after not being renewed and finding a new home on Radio Free Nashville, will be returning to WRVU on Tuesdays from 6-8 a.m. According to an entry on the N+P blog: "Since Doyle Davis of the mighty D-Funk show decided to retire from RVU, that left an open community DJ slot. So they asked me if I wanted to come back. Heck yes!" While it is good news to see another community DJ invited back, it remains to be seen whether another community show -- Nashville Mixtapes? We Own This Town? -- will also find its way back into the rotation now that two of the 25 total community DJ spots are opening up (one for each Hipbilly host). And no offense to Needles + Pins host Laura Powers, who puts on a great show that -- when I'm sentient enough at that hour to listen -- always rocks my morning. But losing D-Funk and Hipbilly Jamboree in the space of a week is just beyond disheartening -- it's sickening. Wow! You Nashville Cream guys are fast! A few clarifications though...
Tuesday night was last show for a while, but the Hipbilly Jamboree is not gone for good. We are still approved to do fill-ins and subs and hope to be back on the regular schedule in the summer.
For any of our fans, "fan" or "friend" us on our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Hipbilly-Jamboree/421422070623 > or our MySpace page. We’ll be posting updates about when we may be doing fill-ins and other fun stuff too.

The new schedule is now up at http://wrvu.org, and from what I can tell, most of the community DJs who made it through now have timeslots that are late at night or early in the morning - in line with the stated mission of saving prime timeslots for students.

What schedule are you looking at? Neither Sacred Hymns nor Spoonful changed times, in addition to other likely misreadings of the schedule.

I checked it over and I have no idea how I got those two so wrong. Everything else is right though, comparing the Fall 09 schedule to the one that starts today.

Since Hipbilly is eligible to sub for other shows, no other community DJ slots will be opening up this semester.
Soooooo... who's got a good contact over at Radio Free Nashville?

This is a bummer, but honestly, I haven't been a loyal listener since the shift from Friday nights, when the Jamboree was my pre-gaming soundtrack. How many times did I call in to drunkenly request "Dog House Boogie"? A lot.

Then for fuck's sake, why didn't they do that in the first place, instead of cancelling those shows altogether? I'm sure all community DJs would rather have to take a semester off here & there due to scheduling conflicts, rather than lose their shows because students (ostensibly) felt crowded out. If the rules state that Vandy students/staff get first pick of time slots, then the board should have recommended that the E-staff simply follow the rules, instead of taking such an extreme step.

I tried to make sense of the new WRVU schedule. The first one sent was a clusterfuck in no particular order. The first one is pretty much irrelevant now due to a few added shows, a few shows leaving, and shows being switched around. The one posted on the website based on "month" shows no endtime for the programs (making it look like "Loud Love" is on for six hours) But if you select it by "week" at the WRVU website then you see when shows end.
Here is the current breakdown:
Undesirable times-(1AM to 6AM)
These times are rarely occupied by students and have been offered to established community DJs who have jobs and families and cannot occupy them. These spots have not been offered to community DJs who have been willing to occupy them in the past. (because they have all been cut) With the exception of Fridays and Thursdays, no show is on past 1AM. (the two shows that are don't go past 2AM) AM Saturday is a barren wasteland compared to last semester. Community occupied all the AM spots of Saturday last year. Now there are none. Sure, even community can sometimes have a hard time filling these spaces, but community are the usually the only ones willing to do so. God forbid all hours are attempted to be filled. Wouldn't want to look too much like a real radio station, i guess.
Total Undesirable Time open:33hours
Daytimes - (6AM to 6PM)
Primo radio times that occupy drive time slots, daytime work radio, and pre to post church listenings. All those cars you see during the day could possibly surf their dials towards WRVU. Students should definetly get dibs during these times, but there are a few holes. Tues 11AM to 2PM are unoccupied. Also the three hour block of Wed, 10AM to 1PM is open as well. There are hour hunks also missing throughout the week. IS WRVU attempting to fill these voids? I hear that WRVU is trying to rush training more students to fill spots. (which would result in apethetic half-assed radio) Though I can't verify that statement, it is merely a rumor.
Total Daytime slots open: 12hours
Nighttime(is the right time)-(6PM to 1AM)
More primo radio real estate. The nighttime is party time. It is also the time where kitchen workers all over Nashville listened to shows like "Hipbilly" or "D-Funk" (or used to) while they gleefully made over-priced quesadillas for Nashville's consumptive masses. WRVU has done a decent job making sure these times get filled up. There are a few gaps though. It also seems strange that on 11pm Saturday night Hal takes over until 6AM.
Total Nighttime slots open: 5hours
GRAND TOTAL OF CURRENTLY OPEN SLOTS- 50 HOURS! More than two whole days of Hal! Current time slots are being renegotiated. (a common occurence at the beginning of each semester) Where one show moves, the previous time listed on schedule will then be open.
The total amount of community shows cut last semester would hardly fill this hour amount. Granted most times are AM, but community has always filled that void before. Why can't they be allowed to do so now? Based upon this current schedule, community was cut "to make way for more students" but the hour vacancy left by the cut DJs is obviously not filled. Why cut a 4AM show that no student will ever occupy? Why cut a bluegrass show when there aren't any? Why attempt to move decades long, beloved, community shows to 2AM when there are plenty of chopped DJs waiting to fill those undesired voids?
Has WRVU always been managed so brainlessly or am I just now noticing?
