Monday WTF? Video: Fever Ray's Speechless, Melty-Faced Acceptance Speech

Posted by D. Patrick Rodgers on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 3:51 PM

So some background here: Fever Ray is the solo debut effort from Swedish artist Karin Dreijer Andersson, who happens to be one-half of brother-sister indie-electronica duo The Knife. She recently won "Best Dance Artist" at the P3 Gold Awards in Gothenburg, Sweden, and the video above is of her acceptance speech. Here's a video for her song "When I Grow Up." As far as background info goes, that's all I've got for you. Except to conjecture that, aesthetically, Fever Ray is something of a European Lady Gaga. And, as with most things European v. most things American (especially in the dance-pop realm, anyway), Fever Ray is a bit more compelling and significantly weirder. So simmer on that a bit, and good luck avoiding nightmares. For old times' sake, check out clips of some Weird City acceptance speeches past after the jump. While embedding is disabled on this one, Marlon Brando's acceptance refusal Oscar speech for The Godfather by way of Sacheen Littlefeather is pretty epic and definitely bears re-watching. Mudvayne's bizarro gunshot-to-the-face speech for their VMA Award deserves a mention. Because, you know, "Success: It's a great feeling." Way to show those Viacom squares what's up!
And who forget when Rage Against the Machine's Tim Commerford climbed a set piece during Limp Bizkit's VMA acceptance speech, rightfully taking the attention away from Fred Durst?
I'm personally a pretty big fan of Mariah Carey's drunken boobery at the 2010 Palm Springs Film Festival. It's a better performance than Glitter, anyway.
And of course, the king of all acceptance speeches, MJ's speech for the "Artist of the Millennium Award" -- an award that didn't actually exist.

I believe she just accepted the award for her fantastic performance in Deep Space Nine episode #143 where she duped Quark that shifty, yet hilarious Ferengi into selling his bar to her for a measly 400 Nondoran. That was a classic!

Fever Ray is nothing like Lady Gaga. Wearing odd clothing has nothing to do with the intentions behind it and Fever Ray's music/image isn't about fame, it's quite the opposite.

Thus my use of the word "aesthetically" and the fact that I pointed out that I consider Fever Ray much more compelling.

Love the Mariah one. That's possibly the worst buffer music I've ever heard. and the presenter looked like he was trying to get some action while her guard was down.

Hmmm, her first video off this record was on another level. You should check that one out. And yah she's about as close to Lady Gaga as she is Miley Cyrus. You know, both playing characters. Right.?. Knife super fan out,
JT

Was Karin not taking the piss of Gaga, no? That's what I thought...
ALSO, just.. love her. So much.
Her songs get better every time I listen.

Lady Gaga isn't even on the same level as Fever Ray.
Fever Ray's music is not commercialized pop crap. There is meaning behind what she is doing unlike Gaga who is doing all her so called "outrageous" things for the spotlight. With her skimpy clothes and choreographed dances she is far from original.
While Fever Ray's focus us on the music.....Gaga's focus is me me me me.
