Hope you've been working on your beard! Joanna Newsom is coming back to Mercy Lounge, Mar. 28, and the beard remark has something to do with the facial stylings of the men in attendance at her show at Mercy way back in November 2006. (It was real quiet, too.)

Now, I'm not what you'd call a Joanna Newsom fan -- in fact, it's hard for me to sit through her records -- but I have to say she won me over as a live performer. Iggy Pop once said that when you're in the studio, and it's just you and a microphone, you can end up doing a lot of annoying things with your voice that you don't do if you're playing an instrument and singing at the same time. Maybe that's why Newsom, who played harp for her set, came across so much more forcefully -- see seemed to discard the extraneous flourishes and squeaks that I dislike on her albums. Or maybe I "got over myself," as the saying goes. Either way, it was quite a show -- even if I haven't listened to an album of hers since.

Newsom's Mercy engagement will be 18+ and start at 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m. and will set you back one Old Hickory.

She seemed really pissed about those sound guys. I was afraid it would've turned her off of coming back to Nashville. Although maybe it's just a stop of convenience since she's playing Big Ears Fest that weekend in Knoxville.
