It breaks my heart to have to inform you, dear readers, that yet another local musician has found himself the victim of a break-in. Altered Statesman's Steve Poulton sent along an email from his collaborator Joe McMahan regarding the theft of local Michael Backes' gear. See the full list of what was taken after the jump.

My friend Mike Backes was broken in to yesterday and had some really cool gear stolen that he had worked very hard to acquire. I feel like it is my duty to pass along the list and hopefully help get this stuff back and prosecute the vile imbecile who perpetrated this crime. Here's the list:

I cannot BELIEVE they took his UPRIGHT BASS! I hope they catch these truly awful people. 2009 has been a very bad year for crime in Nashville. I have TOO MANY close friends and acquaintances that have been deeply affected or hurt by crime this year. Enough is enough.

That's like what, 5 break-ins since the summer? Jesus.

I also had a break in last week (Inglewood area). Had a Fender Jazz Bass, acoustic guitar, and flat screen tv stolen. My dog was missing for a few days as well. I hope they catch these people.

Some other friends of mine who live 3 blocks up from Michael were broken into and robbed the day before.

I suggest several well placed stakeouts across the east side. Have all of these been during the day? Mine was last Wednesday between 8 and 5.

Lot of fishy business on the East Side as of late. Makes me very nervous.

What the hell is wrong with people? As a fellow upright bass player, I am truly sorry for your situation.

Keep your eyes peeled for a turquoise sedan. Dark tinted windows, early to mid 90's Ford or Chevy. It's been spotted in a few different east nasty neighborhoods parked outside of homes and or slowly driving by. We watched it drive past our house 7 or 8 times before parking right in front and staring for 15 min. or so.
4 males inside, 2 african american, 2 hispanic.

It's just a product of gentrification. Real estate agents and landlords made East Nashville appear safer than it was, got the artists to move in and now we're seeing the consequences. It sucks but you should really spring for insurance. Just don't spend as much at 3 Crow and use that money for your premium.

At shuck and Jive:
Your an ass.
Real Estate agents and landlords are to blame. Really? Once again, Your an ass. If you bought a house, you do have insurance SO how would real estate agents have anything to do with it? East Nashville is the best neighborhood in town, these acts were unsafe, not the neighborhood.

I think it's time to arm our musicians. After all, we're the ones staying out Until 2am every night loading up gear. Pack while we pack. My new motto.

I really wish we could bring back chopping off some fucker's hands or dick or whatever when they get caught robbing houses. Sure would make them think twice about it especially with no hands to carry shit out of a house. Thieves are like the murderers of dreams and aspirations and should be punished as such.
So I hope everyone gets their shit back and these joyriding thieves get their dicks and hands cut off. Cheers!

S&J isn't an ass. He/she/it speaks the truth. I lived in East Nasty twice over the years and it is unsafe. Were it not for the 80 pound pitbull I owned, I would have suffered a similar fate. Gentrification IS the driving force behind this problem and it's not going away. East Nashville has a great bar scene and some great locals with creative tendancies. But to call it the best hood in the ville is just chest-pounding. Lots of things suck about that place, it's still ugly, rundown, and crime ridden. Maybe that appeals to one's post-post-nu-punk sensibilities, I dunno. Bottom line: shitty neighborhood, cool people. Also: 'you're / your' : catch the grammer fever.

Shuck & Jive speaks the truth. East Nashville is still as ghetto as when I grew up over there. Crime is going to continue, so deal with it.

You all are right about crime being an ongoing issue on the East Side, but you're behaving as though living there means you're signing away your rights. No matter where you live, being the victim of this sort of crime is devastating and unwarranted. A little empathy goes a long way.
And burrito, you spelled grammar wrong.

every time i take that brisk, sunny, fall, headache-y, morning walk down woodland to locate and pick up my car from wherever in five points i abandoned it, i'm glad i live in east nashville, and i think some of it is run-down, but most of it is really nice, and i'll take my chances on the crime. the only time i was robbed of all my gear was when i lived in west nasty.
sorry this happened or that it happens to anybody. its gut-wrenching on a lot of levels. there's nowhere to put that anger.

I used to live in Green Hills (I know, I know) and someone was found dead in the laundry room about a year before I moved in. Dead! Near where the Whole Foods is now! Don't blame East Nashville.

Additional serial #s:
Glyph hard drive - 050Q9228896
Apogee Ensemble - EN50932
UA LA-610 - 1505
Aguilar DB359 - 1734 (I think. That one is from memory.)
Alesis monitor speakers - C121A
M-Audio Axiom - 71230
And to Suck & Jive:
Your opinion is debatable. Your lack of class is a certainty.
Anonymously insulting someone in a time of tragedy is obviously the act of a very unhappy, spiteful individual. I'm sure some very smart people could think for a very long time and not come up with a reason for doing so that would signify any positive qualities in you as a human being.
I pity you.
I lost a lot of valuable possessions, but I'll eventually probably be able to replace them.
You'll probably always be a miserable, worthless dick.

Let me first say that I feel for anyone who has had something stolen from them.
In Germantown we had a rash of break-ins/robberies. This activity has definitely slowed down. As a community we became very involved with the local police precinct. The Neighborhood association encouraged the residents to become active. I have the non-emergency police number (615-862-8600) in my phone and when I see anyone that makes me feel uncomfortable I report the suspicious activity. There are also run-down and abandoned buildings and houses over here and a good idea is to call at least once a week and report the codes (http://www.nashville.gov/codes/codes_info.asp). After so many codes are reported the owners are held accountable for securing these building and thusly getting rid of any floppers/potential criminals.
Again, I am sorry for this and anyone who has been violated in this way. Try to be proactive and learn from what has happened. It is never a good thing to see someone walking and/or hanging out where they look out of place and call the police but then again if they aren’t doing anything wrong then they shouldn’t have anything to worry about.
Get a shotgun and keep it in your house and become active in reporting what happens in your hood. What the cops don't know about hey can't take action on.

Go Backes!
I'm not sure how owning a shotgun is going to protect someone from being broken into when they are not home (as is what happened here). All it will do is add another item to the list of things that were stolen.

I got robbed while I was in the process of moving to east nashville. Over $1k worth of gear. Hadn't even officially moved in yet. talk about a nice welcome to the neighborhood!
For the first time in my life I seriously considered getting a shotgun. Honestly I don't think my landlords would want a gun on their property so it probably won't happen. I know there are more practical precautions to take to avoid robbery, but unless you've ever had your home broken into, don't pass any moral judgements on those who may choose, for a variety of reasons, to keep a shotgun in the house. Its not like i'm gonna join the goddamn NRA and start voting republican or anything. I am opposed to handguns. Maybe its a sign that I'm getting older but I honestly don't think its unreasonable or breaking taboo for people who live in a neighborhood with a history of break-ins to keep a shotgun/rifle in the house.
to whoever posted under the name damn!!!:
i hope you reported your obsevations to the local precinct. based on the conversation i had with a detective, the cops seem ready and willing to help and obviously eager to stop these burglaries, however theres only so many pieces of the puzzle that they can put together on their own.

My 1966 D-35 Martin guitar was stolen from my condo in Donelson Monday, Nov. 23, during the day while I was at work. I've owned this for more than 30 years--my dad (since deceased) gave it to me when I was a teenager, for Christmas. I'm still looking for the serial number in my files, but there is one distinguishing thing about it: there are two inlay dots on the bridge where someone screwed the bridge down to repair it in the early '70s, before my family owned the guitar. If you see this guitar, contact me at nancyc@ibma.org or call the police. THANKS. -Nancy C.
