At press time, it's the year 2009. But don't tell Queensrÿche or Lita Ford that. Judging by the fleet of tour buses seen in the Mercy/Cannery lot and the wireless mics, B.C. Rich guitars and studded chokers seen in the above video, 'Rÿche and Ford handily transformed Cannery Row into a veritable monsters-of-rock showdown Wednesday night when they rolled out the nostalgia, inspiring hundreds of Middle Tennesseans to dust off the spandex and revisit the peroxide. For those who rocked, we at the Cream salute you.
The video above--taken at Wednesday night's show--is of Lita Ford playing her seminal hit "Close My Eyes Forever." In for the part of Ozzy Osbourne--who famously dueted with her on the 1988 chart-topper--is Queensrÿche singer Geoff Tate. To me, this song has always been a perfect example of a collaboration that is equal parts career high point for one artist as it is career low point for another. While I know most of you consider Ford's tenure as lead guitarist for The Runaways her shining moment, I'm willing to bet that--judging from this passionate performance--she'd say otherwise. One day, after she inevitably perishes, her tombstone will read: "Here lies Lita Ford, Eyes closed...forever." On the flipside, this is, from perm to performance, hands down Ozzy's most un-metal moment (pre-reality television). It must be a soft spot for Ozzy and Sabbath fans to this day.
Nevertheless, this song is an undeniable hair-metal classic, a power ballad par excellence, and you can feel the multiple orgasms coming off the crowd as Ford and Tate belt this mother out pitch perfectly. Things get really good in the third verse, when the pair show off some of their thespian prowess as they trade lines like star-crossed lovers in a heated quarrel. Wipe the cobwebs from your eyes and enjoy!
