My So-Called Band: Season Two, This Saturday at Mercy Lounge

Some background: I grew up in a small town that couldn't really pick up any radio stations other than bad gospel or fire-and-brimstone preachin', and our local cable company didn't even offer MTV as an option because (seriously) it was the network of the devil. It turns out they were right, but try telling that to a bored 13-year-old. There were zero--literally, zero--options for this backwoods malcontent to find any decent music. Where was I going to go, Wal-Mart? That was a 20-minute drive away. And as much as I enjoy "The Thunder Rolls," come on. And let's remember, this was around 1997. We had the Internet, but Napster hadn't been invented yet. When I was lucky, I could take my sweet Sony boom box into the bathroom and angle the antenna just right to pick up WKDF, which in the olden days of the 1990s was a rock station. But it's not like it was an "alternative" or "college" rock station. I liked a lot of No Doubt, a lot of Foo Fighters, and a lot of (yes) Third Eye Blind. This is what '90s music was to me: big fun hits that were hard earned. Keeping my rural ennui in mind, you can hopefully understand why I'm totes stoked for the return of My So-Called Band this Saturday at Mercy Lounge! First seen at Janet Timmons's eastside birthday shindig, the band consists of Renaissance man Dave Paulson, the prolific Keith Lowen, Josh Watson (The Cute One), and Sam Smith, who currently drums for real-life '90s phenomenon Ben Folds. Maybe they'll play "Brick!" (Ha ha, please don't play "Brick.") They will be joined again by special guest stars Caitlin Rose and Jordan Caress, and in a Nashville Cream Exclusive, we can confirm this Saturday's set will also include Matt Friction and Cortney Tidwell. Will Cortney sing "If It Makes You Happy?" Will Matt sing "Epic?" Those are my guesses! Below are my requests!

Jamiroquai is definitely tops--love that band. "Feels just like it should" is a bad-ass track.

Oh! And Toadies... maybe Lisa Loeb. Or if you want to really be kick ass, Amy Grant. I know you know the lyrics to the Baby, Baby song, Sam.

Alice in Chains?!?
ps. if the 'Epic' you're referring to is the Faith No More song - it was released in 1989.

Album was out in '89, but the single and chart success came in 1990.
Also, I was in kindergarten. This I learned from research, not memory. Old man.

Alice in Chains are one of the greats, to be sure. "In the meantime" also damn groovy. I loved rock back then--I guess that makes me not cool; but damn, I loved/love that music.

I officially request 'Boys and Girls' by Blur. If they play it, I will dance.

I think you need a chick in your band ballsy enough to cover something off the first Hole album, some Babes in Toyland, Bikini Kill, and L7.

Damn Tobin! Blur also... Listing a lot of great stuff! I prefer parklife; but b & g was a cool track.

I am also requesting "Fantasy" by Mariah Carey, "No Diggity" by Blackstreet, and "Free Your Mind" by En Vogue.
All of those songs are so good! I am so excited.
I just want Dave Paulson to sing "It doesn't mean I don't like my strong black brothers."

Definitely need a Hole cover at some point... I agree with that one. And when you guys decide you're ready for Veruca Salt, you know who your girl is. If I catch any other girl singing my VS, I will go Courtney Love on you.

Wow, I saw 23 comments and assumed we were being ripped to shreds. Thanks guys! Anyway, yes, please keep the suggestions coming especially if you are willing to sing. We'll be doing more shows and always in the market for guest singers (and rappers), so STEP UP!
For the record, I like a lot of these ideas, especially Hole, En Vogue, Spacehog and Faith No More. We're pretty much just doing hits at this point, so don't hold your breath on archers of loaf.

Boo.
So I guess Unwound, Hum, Superchunk, Tortoise, Built to Spill, Mogwai, Slowdive, Swervedriver, Pavement, Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr, Sunny Day Real Estate, Spiritualized, Kyuss, Magnetic Fields, Radiohead, Modest Mouse, Guided by Voices, Pond and Stereolab are out?

It can't be a whole set of "time to get a drink!" songs, Tobin.

Radiohead had hits in the 90s.

one of the consequences of being an old guy is i had quit listening to commercial radio by the '90s for the most part. i've never even heard most of the songs mentioned here, although i'm aware of the band names. Tobin's list is much more what the '90s meant to me. whatever happened to the punk rock party band?

I think the fun songs would be that much more 'fun' if they were balanced by those with more artistic merit.

report
Posted by TobintheGnome on November 3, 2009 at 7:57 PM

Tobin:
We'll get there. It's our second show, and we're trying to play songs that a lot of people know. And of those songs, we're hoping to strike a balance and pick songs that are BOTH fun and at least somewhat artistically worthwhile. If people keep coming and we keep playing more shows, over time we'll add in some deep cuts and indie stuff. The first thing I realized when we sat down to look at songs is that there are a LOT of great ideas for songs to play. Far too many.
Doyle:
I hear ya, and all I can say is that I think you'd know a lot of our selections. But there's no getting around how fun it is for us, the band members, to play stuff we basically grew up with. Even if you don't know all the songs, hopefully they will all be fun to listen to.
I'll shut up now. Come out and enjoy.

Comments aside, Ashley's description sounds very similar to my own experiences before I had a driver's license. I remember using the dial up internet connection on our single phone line in rural Marshall County to download music. 20 minutes for a single song was blazing fast.
