Here's an obscurity for you record nerds out there: a band called Secret Agents with a version of "New Orleans." It was apparently released on a Nashville record label called...Area 1/2? (That's a pretty weird name for a record label, right?) I asked around a bit, including Billy Adair of The Exotics, and no one seems to know anything about this band or label. Anybody?
Speaking of The Exotics, not long ago, Shawn Mahoney suggested that it's time for a Nashville Nuggets compilation, and since Nashville has been a rock town longer than it's been a country town, we're probably overdue. So, do we add this to the track list? These guys are no Ronny & the Daytonas or anything, but they ain't half bad.

Secret AgentS, note--this is from when bands figured that they needed plural names, since they were themselves plural.
The record's not that great and needs to be about a minute shorter, but it's worth anthologizing.
There's a pretty great compilation of Nashville rock and roll on the English label Stomper Time, straightforwardly titled "Nashville Rock and Roll." The material's pre-Nuggets, stylistically and chronologically, but not too far removed from the Secret Agents' record. Some of it can be called rockabilly and some rhythm and blues but it's all been through that big indiscriminate rock and roll blender. Among the highlights are a couple of wild vocals by Hargus "Pig" Robbins (as Mel Robbins) and some grungy but imaginative instrumentals by the Imps.
Listen to WRVU on Friday mornings, 8-10 AM, and you'll hear a lot of it!
