New Dead Weather Video for 'I Cut Like a Buffalo'

Posted by Steve Haruch on Fri, Oct 2, 2009 at 1:13 PM

When I saw the Pitchfork headline "Watch the Bizarre New Dead Weather Video," I was kind of excited. That didn't last long. (Nothing against the video, which Mr. Jack White directed and is pretty neato overall.) I guess I was just hoping for something a little more, I dunno, bizarre. Something less hammy and eyebrow-y and Chaplin-discovers-taxidermy. Sure, the thing doesn't make a whole lot of sense, in any kind of linear, the-visuals-reinforce-the-theme-of-the-song-as-I-lip-sync-the-lyrics kind of way, but "bizzare"? I mean, it's no "Obscure."

Maybe they meant "antebellum charm and grace."

The hula hooper you see in the video is from Nashville's own Hooprama! Props for using local performers!

Gloriously freaky video for this song, I totally love it. Strange demented magic that makes perfect surreal sense somehow, but only deep within the dreaming lizard brain. Jack White is looking quite luscious there, too. Nobody else does that "adorably cute but scary weird" combination quite as well as he does. (Maybe it's a paradox that fits the perplexing lyrics. He's pretty, like a woman - but he's also edgy and dangerous, like a buffalo.)

I haven't seen this many shameless plugs crammed together since Jeremy Piven's hair piece circa Grosse Pointe Blank.

I love Jack White and all of his music, but this is so self absorbed. It seems as though he lost sight of making the video as stunning as it could be because he wanted to be the star. When is Jack not the star of whatever he is doing? I always hoped he'd stay humble. I mean, it's visually catching, but it's too predictable of Jack White to make something like this. I'm a huge, seriously, huge fan of his, but I'm at the point where I'm more interested in his earlier endeavors because they feel more innocent.
