Dear 16-Year-Old Me,
Prepare your wistful emo ass for both some good news and some bad news. SDRE have reunited (again), and they're totally playing songs like "7" from Diary on Jimmy Fallon's late-night show. Yes, Jimmy Fallon has a late-night show. No, Leno didn't get fired for sucking. The bad news? Sunny Day Real Estate are skipping Nashville on their reunion tour. But they are playing in Atlanta on Oct. 3, although that's significantly further than Twentysomething You is willing to drive to see them.
What's that? Oh, yes. Totally the original lineup. Bassist Nate Mendel probably had some time off from playing with Foo Fighters because Dave Grohl is touring in that band with John Paul Jones. Yes, seriously. Yes, dipshit, that John Paul Jones. Anyway, Diary and LP2 have been remastered and rereleased, so use those to subdue both your melancholy and your infinite sadness. What's that? Oh. Yeah, the Pumpkins technically kinda reunited, but don't worry about all that. It's definitely not the same. Plus, James Iha's in that band with the kid from Hanson now. Yes, seriously.
Buck up,
Future You

It is preposterous how quickly seeing Sunny Day sent me into a reversal back to the mid-90s. But there I was at the bar (the staff of which kindly turned all the TVs to Fallon and turned the house music down so a buncha us could watch), sitting cross-legged on the stage, head turned up at the flickering image.
It was just like being 15 again, but with beer (well, better beer).
Fallon gets some great guests. Not only is his house band The Roots, fucking Megadeath was on last week. Also, Q-Tip played and sat in with the Roots for the whole show.
why couldn't they have played a good song? (like anything not on diary.... what a stinker that turned out to be!)
Megadeth were on? I gotta look that up.
I still dig SDRE. They, along with Sugar, Archers, Sebadoh and others, helped ease me away from the grunge and metal of my high school days and helped usher in the world of 'indie' which would define my musical tastes in college and beyond.
