In this week's City Limits, I wrote about the struggling Family Wash, the East Nashville gastropub that may close its doors in the next few months if business doesn't pick back up.
If you've been to the corner of Porter and Greenwood on the East side, you know it's a low-key hang known best for a pint and a pie, and where all those East Nashville auxiliary men can always be found kickin' it old school. (We've written it up as, among other things, the Best Place to Spot That One Dude Who Played On That Record for our Best of Nashville issue.) For seven years, the place has slowly grown its own loyal neighborhood crowd, but in the last few months, business has taken such a dip that owner Jamie Rubin says he'll probably have to shut down if crowds don't materialize soon. It seems the recession has hit late in some of the more hidden shadowy intersections.
Among the many future things Rubin may do to boost the biz: Add a second pie-and-pint night (one's already every Tuesday), feature drink specials and add a boutique record label a la Knitting Factory Records. But in the meantime, he's coordinating some as-of-yet-unannounced ticketed shows at the Wash featuring local heavy-hitters to make some bucks. We'll keep you posted as we find out more, but in the meantime, if you support local businesses, dig fine beers, like shepherd's pie, live in East Nashville, like paying only $10 for a pint and a pie on Tuesdays, feel like being nice, have goodness in your heart, like seeing people who just got off tour with Bob Dylan play for tips somewhere for no other reason than because they like it, enjoy brushing elbows with Warren Pash, think about larger economic dilemmas outside of your own and wish to influence them in some way, then by all means, stop by this week and help a brotha out.

Shepherd's pie? Why did I not know this ages ago? I will absolutely cross the river for shepherd's pie.
I sincerely hate to read that The Family Wash is having difficulty. I live in Springfield, MO and travel to Nashville a couple of times a year to visit my son & his wife & we have frequented The Family Wash several times.. IT is awesome & take my word for it... It is well worth the traveling!! I love this restaurant & will be sorely disappointed & sad should it disappear from Nashville!!
