This week's cover story is a look at a current breed of female songwriters who've cropped up on the local rock scene in the last few years. I focus on three acts you've heard a lot about if you've been following the Cream's musical crushes--Caitlin Rose, Tristen Gaspadarek and Those Darlins.
For those who haven't paid much attention, these are more than good-lookin' ladies with pretty voices. Each of them adds a fresh take on her own revivalist brand of pop, folk or country. They're all terrific songwriters and compelling performers. And for my money, the fact that they sing like grown women and not baby-cooing infants is reason enough for mad props.
Oh, and this is also the last issue of the Scene under Village Voice ownership. We've been sold. Ch-ch-changes.

phew ! i was starting to get worried ! i hadn't seen a 'those darlins' post in like 4 hours.
thanks cream !
Lookin' fly, Cato. Nice stems. Those things go all the way up?
from the neck up they all look like dudes. neck down i'd hit that,
Just another 5 hot chicks who'll never have anything to do with me...
someone needs to get Tobin on the next season of VH1's The Pick-Up Artist
pen needs to get his eyes checked. Those ladies are BABES. Show me five guys who look like that, and I'll show you my first five homosexual experiences.
Patrons at my dude-heavy watering hole of choice spent time ogling the cover shot and stating our preference.
To wit: "I'm a Caitlin guy" or "I'm partial to Nikki Darling." That kind of thing.
I got in a PBR-fueled shouting match about whether I loved Tristen more than this other dude.
Not my proudest moment.
Yes, they are all hawt. And, more importantly, they all got chops.
But Boner, you told us WE were your first homosexual experience! You must just say that to everyone. Keeping with the gay vibe, look at how trendy T&C's shoes are, I mean high fashion. I'm impressed ladies. So... strappy.
i'm just glad they could all stop yapping about clothes long enough to turn and face the camera. dames...
I think Nashville commenters could take Brooklyn commenters in any battle.
Thanks, Tracy for the eyeopening cover story on these fine young ladies. I follow the scene rather closely, and somehow these acts have slipped under my radar. I will pay closer attention. I'd also like to ask you all, the press, to maybe drop a few lines here and there in "The Spin" or even on the cream to let me and other local music fans know what's going on with them---show reviews, upcoming shows out of town, etc. It also blows my mind that these ladies have been practically ignored in all other nashville publications, as well as national media. If the national media does catch on to this young nashville talent, please let us know by posting here or by blurbs in the Scene.
Thanks to Tracy we finally have the full scoop on these wonderful songwriters!
baffled as to whether or not ???? is brimming with sarcasm or naivety...
Smells like sarcasm to me. Hey ???, cover stories aren't targeted to Nashville Cream readers, they're targeted to a general readership who might not follow every little detail about the local rock scene. But I wouldn't expect you to understand that.
if that was sarcasm, it was the most genius kind of sarcasm ever.
