If you follow the Mercy Lounge on Twitter then you've undoubtedly noticed their recent daily tweets alluding to a super-secret ninth band who are presumably flying into town to play a super-secret set to close tonight's 8 off 8th festivities. By examining these tweets we know that this is a band who:
...hate Kings of Leon but love to make you dance... is very popular with boys and has had over 7 bassists...will perform at next month's All Tomorrow's Parties...had either Kings of Leon's drummer OR Merlin the Magician as the drummer at their 1st show... expect the entire club ends to be full of boys who love the Kings of Leon.
Any guesses? Brendan Benson played a secret late-night show at The Basement on Sat. so he's out. Perhaps it's a different Raconteur or a self-loathing King of Leon. Who are some artists playing ATP next month? It could be the Nashville affiliated Jesus Lizard, funny man David Cross, critical darlings Animal Collective, the crazy rhythms of The Feelies, The Flaming Lips, No Age, Tortoise, Shellac, a reunited Suicide, Boss Hog, Deerhunter, The Melvins, Dead Meadow or Deerhoof. Geez, ATP has a holy-shit lineup if I've ever seen one.
Also appearing at tonight's NINE off 8th are Delta Saints, capitalFRESH!, Oscar Anthony and the Westfolk Band, Moon Taxi, Mia Calderon, Gabe Vitek and the Ivory, Summer Hartbauer & Max and the Wild Things. I think Tortoise would be the best fit for that bill, they're totes Moon Taxi's kindred spirits. As always the event is free and kicks off at 9pm. Come on down and be surprised, thrilled, disappointed or enraged.

Don't forget about $2.50 Yuengling lager bottles at every 8 off 8th for the rest of the year. Mmmmmm inexpensive lager.
Here's a link to the facebook event page:

Tonight is not to be missed. If the tweets have not lead you to the exact identity of the artist(s) as of yet, you're not going to figure it out until tonight. And you'll be happy when you do!
Also, to be absolutely clear, we at the Mercy Lounge harbor no animosity whatsoever toward the Kings of Leon. In fact, many of us are big KOL fans. We are only twitter-ing what the artist(s) has asked us to.
your "(who can it be now)" had me hoping for men at work.
Spring Hill Spider Party. They figured it out on the Nashville for Free blog based on the song "This Club is Full of Boys," Derrick Brown appearing at ATP on David Cross's comedy stage, and some bonus clues given by a commenter.
I didn't realize Spring Hill had an airport. What a joke!
This was a complete joke and a bad decision by Mercy Lounge.
I have heard of Spidermonkey before however I am not sure if they have a reputation for being rude to people watching their show. If they have that rep then they certainly delivered. Weather KOL showed up or not, the Spidermonkeys did nothing but talk, make fun of the audience, poor beer on each other, and take shots at a band that has found success. If they were reacting to the crowd with their behavior, what did they expect to happen, welcoming open arms and a round of applause?
I gave them 3 songs. After all I had already stood around for 4 hours. One of them was a parody/cover of Sex On Fire. Perhaps they could have pulled it off if they didn't bookend the tune with a bunch of sour grapes toward their arch nemesis, the Evil KOL. It is one thing to make a few jokes here and there but when the audience who (yes, I know got in free) is making trips to the bar between every set happens to be the butt of the joke then that is just poor judgement and I think should have been thought out more in detail by bluedrew37203 and the rest of the management of Mercy Lounge.
To the person who posted about the Yuengling "Don't forget about $2.50 Yuengling lager bottles at every 8 off 8th for the rest of the year. Mmmmmm inexpensive lager."
Mercy Lounge ran out of the lager, I am sure due to this unexpected growth in turn out for this event. You would think advertising a beer special and then running out of said beer, a good move would be to then offer another beer at $2.50. Especially since most of the later crowd was patronizing the venue under false pretences.
Anyway I know that a lot of people left Mercy Lounge last night with different perception of Mercy Lounge/Cannery Ballroom, I know I did. One guy was about to rush the stage, empty Yuengling bottle in hand, but was pushed and rushed out by his buddies. Incidentally, contrary to what the lead Spidermonkey said, I didn't see anyone in the crowd wearing tight jeans, tight vests, (except Spidermonkeys front man), or well coiffed hair, except me of course.
So...by Spidermonkeys do you mean Spring Hill Spider Party? Did they change their name, or are you just slightly misinformed?
Anyway, seems like an actual Kings of Leon fan would know that they A) Aren't playing ATP B) Had just played a show in Canada and C) Haven't had seven bassists. If you seriously went there thinking they were going to play, that's on you. Not the Lounge.
Uh....it sounds to me like last night ended up being a congregation of people with poor deductive reasoning skills. Considering that Kings of Leon are on tour on the west coast, aren't slated to play ATP and haven't had 7 bass players--let alone another 6 brothers, thank God--it wouldn't have take more than 3 minutes of internet sleuthing to figure out that them perfoming last night would've been impossible. I'm surprised that no one figured out who the mystery act was from clues in the twitter hints and dropped it on this thread. This does seem like an awfully good set up for a real secret show that they'd like to keep under wraps though. Boy who cried wolf style.
@Franck Ceenatra (and anyone else whom I pissed off)
I'm sorry. I misjudged a situation and poorly managed its execution in a way that many people found to be insensitive. I honestly expected last night to be a small joke that only made its way through our normal 8 off 8th crowd.
As a little background, the show started out as a secret because it was the birthday of one of Derrick's friends and he wanted to surprise him with a secret show. Obviously, that got out of hand. I personally bare the responsibility for that; and if you were offended, please direct it toward me.
In the past, when SHSP has played, their shows have been billed in similar fashion - though never to the point last night's was. Their fans (yes, people are fans of theirs) seem to see it as Kaufman-esque humor and enjoy that.
Not everyone does though, and I screwed up last night by not realizing that how quickly word-of-mouth and internet hype grows. The last thing I expected was for people to believe for even a moment that someone like Radiohead was in Nashville.
The last thing I ever wanted to do was to make someone genuinely upset. I personally and professionally made a mistake, of which I am very embarrassed. If you are reading this as one of the people who is upset that I did not do more to quiet the incorrect public chatter, you are right. For that, again, I apologize.
Feel free to direct any complaints, comments or questions you might have to me at drew@mercylounge.com
I personally find the whole situation to be hilarious. I spent 5 minutes googling the clues yesterday and figured out it was SHSP. Anyone who is upset or feels tricked shouldn't. You took the clues and
forced them to fit the band you wanted, despite Mercy saying that it was NOT Kings of Leon. Grow up, people.
Drew, Apology Accepted. Word of mouth these days is like a wild fire in California sometimes. It gets out of hand fast and is uncontrollable.
Gold in your write up of this story you mention many bands playing ATP that would have been great to see. As I said in my breakdown of the event, weather KOL showed or not, someone, anyone who was not just plain rude to the crowd there would have been better. Gold Quote, "It could be the Nashville affiliated Jesus Lizard, funny man David Cross, critical darlings Animal Collective, the crazy rhythms of The Feelies, The Flaming Lips, No Age, Tortoise, Shellac, a reunited Suicide, Boss Hog, Deerhunter, The Melvins, Dead Meadow or Deerhoof. Geez, ATP has a holy-shit lineup if I've ever seen one."
I agree, holy-shit ATP. Unfortunately I got the tip from a friend of a friend who heard from mercy lounge twitter that something was going on at mercy lounge. After getting the chance to see Brendan Benson at the Basement, the excitement was still there and the anticipation of who could be playing was high. I rushed out of the house without doing any sleuthing and expected something surprising, yet good quality. And that is not to take away from any of the Spring Hill Spider Party's accomplishments in the past or their successes in the future - all the best. However last night they missed and it was the only time I have ever heard them and they blew it for me. They are probably going to get a lot of press and chatter out of this, whatever it takes right? The good news is that I heard a couple of bands that were really good. The bad news is they never said their name so I don't know who they are; however with some sleuthing I am sure I can find the line up from last night.
Mercy Lounge has heard plenty about this already and the apology has been issued. For me this is dead issue now and time to move forward.
dude, you didn't do anything super-deceptively evil, you filled up your (big-ass) bar on a monday night, and i seriously doubt there will be an en masse mercy lounge boycott over it. i say good job doing your job.
@Larry Mell
Thanks, but I never want to fill up the bar for one night based on what people perceive to be a lie. That definitely is never thr job I want to do.
I got smacked in the chest because of disbelief by a crazy person when you said MOTHER FUCKING RADIOHEAD, and I still think it was hilarious.
I thought the whole situation was hilarious, but then again, I'm a big fan of Derrick Brown and I get the joke.
@Sammy Dayvus Joonure. I thought my post smacked with enough sarcasm to let on that none of those bands would be playing. Especially considering that none of the ones I mentioned had 7 bass players or a drummer who was in KOL.
@Gold The author’s intent is not always picked up by all those who read it.
I never saw any of the "clues" myself, as I didn't find out about the super-secret show until around 10:30. Furthermore I have previously never been to this site, Nashville Cream either So in a way you are benifiting from this thing too. I guess I am just not in the know, you know. I will definitely make sure to know how many bands have had multiple drummers and which bands have a lot of brothers going forward so I will not be viewed as dumb, dense, or childish.
What does "people with poor deductive reasoning skills" have anything to do with "internet sleuthing" to find out obscure facts about a band that many in attendance last night had not heard of? (Rhetorical question smacking with sarcasm). Given the time yes I might have been able to deduce who was playing.
Hindsight is 20/20.
I almost don't want to post this as it will perpetuate the discussion but you did call my name.
@Drew
My friends and I will be back to see Dan Auerbach and the rest of the top class acts you bring in there. If I ever have a Tuesday off work I will probably get back to BMI's 8 of 8th.
You have convinced me there was no intent to deceive or maliciousness behind this when it happened and I appreciate your time to say what you have said.
I'd like to put myself in the camp of "had I known Derrick Brown was in town I would have totally gone" to see him make an ass out of the band, the crowd, mercy lounge, Nashville, Tn, America, Earth, Milky Way, Zod, universe, self perception, existence, shopping malls................
I suppose last year's Metallica show at the Basement may have mislead people to believe that Thom Yorke or Wayne Coyne would randomly show up on Cannery Row, but anyone with the internet or sufficient knowledge of the Nashville music and party scene should have caught the "club is full of boys" reference.
For those of us who had been out of touch with the recent tweets, like me, it was a pleasant surprise to get a text from a friend in the crowd at Mercy Lounge at 1 AM about this Long Beach badass being back in town after, what, five or six months? So here's a little positive reinforcement and a big thanks to Drew, et. al. for hosting these "super secret guests" and allowing all of that cheap lager to pool on the floor and the stage.
Long live the Spidermonkeys! (hah!)
Nashville for Free were quick on their feet for that one. Pretty funny shit for a bunch of geeky college chicks.
Excuse me Jon K, but we are two VERY geeky college chicks with LOTS of time and an insane knowledge of triva. I thought that it was a blast trying to figure out who was playing. I honestly hope that there are more secret shows for us to figure out in the future.
Merci, Jean
I still have a hard time believing that redheaded girl on NashForFree is a real human being. Cute girls don't generally converse like a foul mouthed Chuck Klosterman. I vote robot. Kudos to you geeky college chicks. A job well done...
I still can't believe people are complaining about a free show. Get over it, use google once and a while and get a sense of humor. They got you and you took the bait. Getting a text from someone about hearing that some band is supposedly playing a secret show should cause you to want to use some deductive reasoning. Sorry you had to sit through bands who you didn't know before, but that's how every band gets it's start. Consider it a blessing that you got to hear some up- and-comers who might turn into the next band you get faked into seeing at a secret show.
