Seems SST Records proprietor and former founder/ leader of Black Flag, Mr. Greg Ginn, is making an appearance on the The End on the 18th of September in not one, but two bands: Jambang--his psychedelic jam ensemble--and The Texas Corrugators, a western swing outfit.
The trick is this: if you're planning to break out your faded Everything Went Black tee for added effect when you're pumping your fist to revisionist versions of "Police Story" and"Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie," stay home. Ginn won't allow The End to so much as advertise him as a former member of the legendary punk band, so it's pretty unlikely you're going to hear any of the classics. His contract stipulates that only jam bands and jazz combos be booked as openers, so there's not even a chance an opening act will lure him stage to rock the riff from "Six Pack."
Black Flag fans shouldn't find this all that surprising. Ginn's love of jazz and jamming was pretty evident with all that unruly, metal-tinged free jazz guitar noodling on albums like Loose Nut, Family Man, and Maloney's fave, The Process of Weeding Out. I haven't paid much attention to Ginn's long list of projects since Black Flag's demise in '86, but it definitely looks like that wasn't just a phase. And, of course, you can't blame a guy for learning how to play guitar. So, if you want to see one of rock n roll's most underrated and influential shredders get his groove on, this is highly recommended. Again, just don't bother with requests.
In other news, if you do actually want to see some old school Southern California punkers playing what they're famous for, head over to The Muse tomorrow night where Fear, D.I., Agent Orange, Total Chaos and more are playing courtesy of the So-Cal Punk Invasion Tour
