They say every dark cloud has a silver lining. My soul was temporarily crushed today when I got word that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's planned Sept. 10 appearance at the Sommet Center has been pushed back 69 days to Nov. 18. But it's not all bad. It means that A) the show now comes even later in the tour--the later the better as far as performance goes B) the show will no longer fall on the same night as the Titans' season opener and C) the band will play their signature album Born to Run in its entirety. According to a press release received by the Scene:
The September 10th Bruce Springsteen concert at the Sommet Center is being moved. The new date is Wednesday, November 18th.The new date will feature a special performance of "Born To Run" in its entirety. As far as I can tell this will the the 3rd time Born to Run has been played live...All tickets to the September 10th show will be honored. If people cannot attend the rescheduled date refunds are available through point of purchase
If I had my choice I'd go with The River or Darkness on the Edge of Town, as those have songs that you're likely to never hear performed live, but I'll take Born to Run. I'm not necessarily a huge fan of this "playing albums in their entirety" trend. I like the surprise and suspense of not knowing what's coming next. On the flip side, I am a huge fan of hearing "Backstreets," "Jungleland," and "Thunder Road" all in the same show--something that I've only experienced once in the 11 times I've seen Springsteen. His shows usually average out at 27 songs, there are only eight on BTR so that leaves plenty of room for surprises. Also, if no other dates on the Springsteen itinerary are added or moved the switch from Sept. 10 to Nov. 18 will make the Sommet show the final show of the tour. Tickets for the September date will still be honored and you can purchase tickets for the new date here. I reiterate: DON'T FUCK THIS UP!
Showing 1-18 of 18
If you're interested in roadtripping to Greenville, we could catch that show on 9/16. I've got peeps in those parts.
Yay! I couldn't make the original date, but I just bought tickets for this one. And now I feel a little sick about the large amount of money I spent . . . but I'm sure it will be worth it.
November 18th! That might as well be 100 years. I wanted to go NEXT MONTH.
@notthejetset, Don't feel bad about the expenditure, you're only three months away from discovering that heaven is a place on earth.
I'm no longer a fan, he's not the boss of me. Who is he to just swan around changing dates willy nilly? I'm flying from England.
Also, I happened to be listening to 'Heaven is a place on Earth' as I read your comment, Gold.
Is there any information - or random theories - on why the show was pushed back?
Funny, I was just listening to some of Born to Run today and during the long sax solo on Jungleland, I started wondering if Clarence is still up to performing that live. He seems not be be in the best physical condition. I guess I'll find out.
Clarence is a 67-year-old former football player so obviously his physical condition is tenuous, he does however hold his own in terms of playing well. He does sit down and take breaks during songs that don't feature him prominantly. The band played "Jungleland" at the show I saw last April in Atlanta and he nailed the solo dead on, so I'm not really worried about his ability to perform. In many ways his role is as the band's mascot so it'll be a sad day when he has to walk away from it. It's hard to imagine him continuing to tour at the rate Bruce does for much longer, speculation is that if this not even if this doesn't end up being the final E Street tour it's likely the final one with the big man.
It's got to be the ticket sales...
It's his 3rd middle TN performance in a year PLUS it wasn't even announced until 2 months before the show. That's how indie bands touring clubs operate... Hit the market 2-3 times a year, book the shows 2 months in advance.
I think the grand conspiracy theory is that tix sales were dragging for all the reasons Will pointed out. Um, plus it was against the Titans season opener. Against the Steelers. That's reason enough to move a show.
I think the Titans thing might have been hurting them as well. That being said, if you look at what sections of the arena are popping up on ticketmaster it appears that this show is selling faster than last year's show. The $65 tickets in the 100 and 200 sections are already sold out, they've also sold out a couple sections in the 300s already. If this ends up being the final show of the tour it'll be packed with fans who will travel from the eastern seaboard. However, the rumour has been that more shows will be added and that the tour will end in the west coast at the end of Nov. So we'll see.
Gold, did you happen to see a concert on the Seeger Sessions tour? If so, what did you think? I regret I didn't, as I really dig the album, and think the live album and concert DVD are tremendous. I hope Bruce does some sort of follow-up album, or something else in a similar vein.
Unfortunately I didn't catch a Seeger Sessions tour and I'm still kicking myself for it. I feel the exact same way you do, love the DVD and I to hope that I get a second chance to see him do a show like that. Everyone I've talked to who caught one said it was an absolute blast. I'd also love to catch an acoustic one-man show. He played the Ryman solo in '96. That must've ruled!
@Adam Buxton Thanks dude! You had the best death scene in Hot Fuzz.
I too was saddened to hear of the postponement - those extra 69 days can't go by fast enough! Apparently, Tom Johnson (over on Greasylake for those who follow the fan sites) has said the show was rearranged due to routing issues. Plus, I'm sure with BTR being performed and them no longer having to compete with the Titans will boost sales for the event as well.
Anyway, the show should be legendary (of course, what Springsteen show isn't?) - last year's show in Nashville was absolutely spectacular. My first Bruce concert, and my first time in the pit! This time, I'm bringing along several of my college friends from Jackson to experience the E-Street Magic.
I know we're already getting BTR, but what sign requests are you guys bringing? I wouldn't mind hearing Roy's piano magic on Racing in the Street; it'd be cool to hear "Fade Away" and "Back in Your Arms" as performed on the European tour this summer too.
