Golden Nugget: Loretta Lynn in Nashville, 1969

Posted by D. Patrick Rodgers on Thu, Jul 23, 2009 at 11:05 AM

So I know the Golden Nuggets aren't typically my thing, but Gold isn't around right now and this one's too cool not to share. Above is some recently added footage (provided by YouTube user RockinGator) of the inimitable Loretta Lynn performing "Show Him You're a Woman" and "Don't Come Home a' Drinkin (With Lovin' on Your Mind)" at a fan club dinner in 1969. The performance apparently took place during the annual Disc Jockey Convention in Nashville, and while I'm not sure what dining hall it is that they're in, Jim Ridley guessed that it might be at the Hermitage Hotel. That sounds about right, right?

Anyhow, aside from her spot-on performance--rife with proud, womanly badassness--Lynn also busts out a charming bit of wry banter that puts most contemporary Nashville singer-songwriter types to shame. Why is it that performers aren't classy, charming, all-around entertainers anymore?

Nice! I can't agree more with your last question! I see Loretta these days and she remains a cut above so many other others; she's the real deal.
