13-Year-Old Bluegrass Prodigy to Whale at the Ryman Tomorrow Night

Posted by Adam Gold on Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 12:02 PM

Every Thursday of this month the Ryman has been playing host to an event called Bluegrass Nights. The event features a host of bluegrass legends of the old-as-fuck variety from Doyle Lawson to Ralph Stanley. Tomorrow night 13-year-old Virginia native Gaven Largent will join Rhonda Vincent et al., and show off his chops on guitar, dobro etc. Judging by the video above it looks like little dude's got some serious chops. Good luck, Gaven! Hopefully someone will offer you some session work, or perhaps a gig at Station Inn. Speaking of Station Inn, they serve lunch now, and their ribs are to die for.

I know times are tough in the print media industry, and you guys live pretty close to the bone. In the spirit of community, I'd like to offer to purchase a dictionary for the Scene blogger staff. Cream, Bites, and Pith need to share, though! If you promise to use it, I'll hie to Davis Kidd this afternoon.

Funny you should mention that, jamiealex. Steve and I actually engaged in a discussion about whether it should be "whale" or "wail" before the blog was posted, and Steve opted for this definition of "whale":
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/whale%5B3%5D
A verb, meaning "to strike or hit vigorously." The verb form "wail" means "to make a sound suggestive of a mournful cry" (though your cited definition indeed includes the jazz slang usage). Wailing, from the definition we're citing, is what the instrument itself would be doing, not the player. We weren't trying to say that Gaven would be emitting a mournful cry, so "whale" in this case seemed to us more appropriate. Thanks for the suggestion, but we have plenty of dictionaries around here.

While I applaud your use of the rare verb choice (both of yas - Cream with "whale" and jamiealex with "hie"), isn't bluegrass frequently described as having "that high, lonesome sound," so wouldn't "wail" (using the "mournful cry" definition) be at least AS appropriate as "whale"?

I'll agree that it's at least as appropriate. In fact, I initially suggested to Steve that we go with "wail." Just wanted to include the explanatory comment so that old jamiealex there might downgrade from his/her horse of an exceptionally high variety to one of acceptable dimensions.

I believe Guitar World, the leading authority on guitar-related verbs, uses "wail."

The article needs one item edited but it's a big one - I have tickets for the Stanley concert and it's Thursday July 16!!! Rhonda Vincent is the July 9 headliner according to the Ryman website.

"downgrade from his/her horse of an exceptionally high variety..."
...Patrick I got a kick out of that.

I'll look him up in 15-20 years, after life deposits several malodorous shits in his lap.

What about the Swedish alt-pop band Whale? "Hobo Humpin Slobo Babe" fucking ruled AND the chick had braces! I think that trumps this vocab bullshit anyday.

I used to get "Hobo Humpin Slobo Babe" stuck in my head all the time when I was in 6th grade. Thanks for bringing that affliction back into my life Sean.
