St. Vincent at Lake Fever

Posted by Steve Haruch on Thu, Jun 18, 2009 at 11:56 AM

The Lake Fever Sessions just keep getting better, and now they went and got Annie Clark--St. Vincent if you're nasty. I caught St. Vincent's set at Bonnaroo and was thoroughly impressed both by her and her band, who played many of the albums' flourishes with remarkable touch and dynamic range. And Clark's a wonderfully odd guitar player, going from clean, Grand Canyon-sized delays to an overdriven tone that sounds like a wasp inside a transistor radio. I've read reviews of her playing to an iPod with an electric guitar, but with all that out of the picture, so to speak, in her Lake Fever session, Clark is captivating as ever on just vocals and acoustic guitar, demonstrating the strength of her songs and her ability to deliver them elegantly in a variety of settings. "Actor out of Work" is above. Check out LFS for "The Strangers" (the opening track from Actor, one of my favorite albums so far this year) and "Oh My God."

Her voice is great but the song is lacking melody and the lyrics are just ok.
