Cortney Tidwell on Pitchfork, ShRoom Bust & More: Newsy Bits

* Cortney Tidwell's Boys reviewed on Pitchfork (7/10): "...Tidwell does at least deserve to be reckoned as St. Vincent's peer-- her music may not be as brightly likable as Annie Clark's, but Tidwell is a more compelling vocalist and more stylistically omnivorous to boot." (P4K)

* Duuuuuuuude! Harsh! Tune in Music City reports: "The men, who were baking the mushrooms into chocolate peanut butter cups at their 303 W. Kingwood Drive home, admitted to police they planned to take the items to the weekend festival in Manchester." Guess you'll have to find some shroom-roni-za, brah.

* Speaking of St. Vincent, she's at Mercy Lounge tonight with Pattern Is Movement. I'm pretty into the new record.

* It's gonna rain, it's gonna rain on the world today. Flip-flops vs. hip-waders. Discuss.

RE: Mushroom bust...
Hilarious:
“Mushrooms are similar to LSD in the fact that they cause people to hallucinate, and like LSD a person can die the first time they use these poisonous mushrooms, especially in the condition that they were in here,” said Murfreesboro Police spokesman Kyle Evans. “Being baked into chocolate makes it a lot easier to consume more than is needed for the high in a short amount of time and can lead to overdose.”

did pitchfork also say that Cortney Tidwell sounded a lot better when it was called Bjork in their review?

Would you like us to stop off in Lebanon on our way to Manchester and read it aloud to you in person? Click the link, dude.

I was under the impression that Anna was being sarcastic. Since they commented about 10 times on how Cortney sounds like Bjork in the previous post. The only thing that can correct hipsters is a hipster with a higher ranking. You can be as pretentious as you want. But when Pitchfork calls out a Bjork comparison. You just got your asses kicked.

Uh, what? Matt, no one that writes for the blog has denied the vocal similarities or clear Bjork/PJ Harvey/et al. influence. I just want to know why it's a bad thing for someone's voice and certain elements of their style to resemble Bjork's.
Pitchfork gave a great album a solid review...still not exactly sure whose asses were kicked by whom.

Everybody stay away from mushrooms. You will die if you even look at them.
I think that pitchfork reviewer's frame of reference is rather small in regards to Cortney Tidwell. Any female artist must get tired of the whole "woman in rock" thing, because it serves as a socio-cultural identifier rather than letting the music speak for itself. Like why even mention PJ Harvey? She's a great artist but her and Cortney are at different ends of the spectrum as to what they have and are trying to accomplish with their music. I get the Bjork comparison, but Cortney and her band's approach is way more grounded in familiar elements of country, rock, and electronic music rather than the otherworldly, abstract vibe Bjork tends to conjure these days.
I like the record, I think she transcends her influences, and the pitchfork writeup must be nice but they missed the point.

When you hear Bjork speak in interviews, you know exactly where the enunciation and inflection comes from. When I spoke to Cortney at a Basement show years back, I was floored when I heard a rather obvious Southern accent. Don't get me wrong, beautiful pipes, but I feel the style is a bit forced. That being said, I'll be picking the album up cos I'm sure it's better than anything Bjork has been doing since 2001.

Which one of you fat, sloppy, diaper-wearing malcontents is going to shave their head & eyebrows, paint their face, and then eat a bullet while listening to Cortney?

a.) Hackelope wins this thread
b.) St. Vincent was transcendent last night. Yup, I momentarily set aside my general malaise at the state of live music everywhere and said it: Transcendent. Best show I've seen this year, and maybe in the last 2+ years.
Also Pattern is Movement were pretty good.

"Transcendent" is right!
I was a bit peeved I missed the majority of PIM's set... still not used to shows that start precisely on time...
Anybody else spot David Byrne in the room? That was, uh, sort of amazing, right?
Great, great show.

J.K. says:

she's faking it during the interview as well
as for the "forced" style..............what do you do that DOESNT have to be forced? you're like a strained blood vessel near the anus
