JEFF the Bro'hood's back from tour with a treat or two. If your band has a music video you'd like us to post, send it along. But I'm warning you: It had better have some conspicuous stagehands and hovering pizza. Otherwise, we're just not going to be interested. JEFF the Brotherhood play tonight at Little Hamilton with Cave, Juiceboxxx & Squidbotz. Also at Springwater Wednesday with The Mahonies, Liquor Store & Weiners.

you guys should change the theme of this blog to completely covering Jeff the Brotherhood. It's 75% there already just tweek it a little more. You could cover their daily habits like what time they get up,their favorite foods, their drug habits, their affinities for playing house parties in front of 10 people ect ect...
so what else is going on tonight, meth? nice baiting, cream.
I've stated my dislike for this band on many occasions. There's just nothing remarkable about the music. However, this video is fucking awesome!
I kind of softened toward JEFF a little bit when somebody made the GWS The Oneness connection.
CAVE is a rad Chicago band that plays Hawkwind-style heavy dirges, and they rule.
jeff makes me want to re-experience high school. . . except with a lot more drugs involved.
anybody else see the Tapheads inspiration?
i think YACHT beat them to it last summer, though.

don't know lonnie? aren't you going to be standing in the front watching some band googly eyed waiting to tell them how great they are? You tell me buddy.
dude... you're breaking the third wall of blogging.
this band is decent. not worthy of all the hate, but if a magazine likes you enough to write 30 articles on you ever 40 days, then i guess ur something.
Please. I'm begging you. Will someone at the SCENE please just admit that one of these guys works for you ? There is no other explanation for the incredible amount of press you give this incredibly (and painfully) average band. I mean this is close to pure shit. Please, I am down on my blogger friendly knees, wearing an AA V Neck T, and I am begging you to just come out of the closet already. This is almost getting embarrassing.
since the cream has been known to constantly post about their writers' bands. really, when was the last time you read a post on here about eureka gold (excluding last week's cover story)?
meth, man of 100 aliases, there you go again.
If the Cream didn't post JEFF news, what would you do with your life? stop whining.
This video is perfect. it's high school musical on it's head. I like it lots.
Actually, I don't think the Cream writes about JEFF more than anyone else, it's just that when they do, WE all write about JEFF more than anyone else. If it was boring we wouldn't do it would we?
next week there will be a JEFF post. the week after that a JEFF post. the week after that another post.
every week a JEFF post. hey this email actually reads like JEFF lyrics. i think i might write this down and take it to their next house show. see you there cream.
give me a break.
next week there will be a "please" post. the week after that a "please" post. the week after that another post.
every week a "please" post. hey this email actually reads like another "please" post. i think i might write this down and take it to my house. see you there cream.
give me a break
Here you go, Meth The Smothersbrothers:
"You could cover their daily habits like what time they get up (1 OR 2 IN THE AFTERNOON),their favorite foods (VIETNAMESE),their drug habits (BEER),their affinities for playing house parties in front of 10 people (THEY LOVE TO) ect ect...(GREAT JOB!)"
maaaaybe it's because JEFF has shit going on to write about that they are written about so often. . . .I think if more bands had more shit going on the cream would write about them too. We have a problem in this town of really talented bands who are simply uninterested in taking the necessary risks to make things happen for themselves.
I'm going to make "And The Relatives" my whipping post on this issue. . .Those guys are too good to be just playing around town!!!!! Please, oh please look alive when you play live and get the fuck out of dodge and play shows. . .I love that band so much but am so disappointed to see them moving so slowly. . . I say this in the most loving and encouraging way possible and hope patrick and company take this as a compliment.
I don't even know how to respond to your comment Ryan.
If playing to the same size crowds and making cheap videos (which literally almost every band with a heartbeat is doing) means "shit going on" then I give you the award for "FINALLY EXPLAINING TO ME WHY JEFF GETS COVERAGE". I'm sorry, but I find myself siding with Please and many others on this topic. Plenty of bands have shit going on. Maaaaaybe you've been spending too much time at clubs that hold less than 200 people ?
I, like most people on this page, find myself fascinated by this pathetic band and their Nashville press. Although, for the first time, I kind of liked reading about them. Only because of these comments though :)
Also, I'll take your cue and check out "And The Relatives" Ryan. I'm sure they have a youtube homemade video up ;)
geez.... god forbid music writers liked a band and championed them. for goodness sake, look at JEFF's tour schedule over the past couple of months. they've been all over the damn place. if you think they play to 10 people in a living room all the time you've got your head stuck in the sand. on top of this, they just released two splits with bands from... guess what... NOT nashville! you use the word "pathetic" in regards to this band but i think it's a more apt description of your unwillingness to recognize something that the majority of the posters on here do.... that... JEFF rulez! it's okay to not like something but, for chrissakes, suck it up and do your own thing. instead of hating on these posts, why not use this forum to get the word out on something YOU like?
"meth called me his buddy! :)"
your everybody's buddy aren't you Lonnie!HaHa!Get real people this band is mediocre at best. The stuff played on lower broad is more interesting then this rip-off band.
right on "wah wah wah" guy.
JEFF The Brotherhood has been almost constantly on the road for the past 3 months, and have played to huge crowds a half dozen times in Manhattan/Brooklyn alone.
upcoming: Chicago, St. Louis, Philly, Montreal, Toronto, Detroit, to name a few.
a third 7' coming soon.
their 5th album in the fall.
It's all on their mySpace and blog. do your homework meth man.
This band rocks for Nashville and I'm proud of them for busting their asses for all these years.
plus, Bone Jam is a hell of a fun song.
Dear wah wah wah!
I will gladly post some stuff on bands that I like. I'll start here. And thank you for asking me to post.
- For starters 'Space Capone'. He has some tour dates. And also has some youtube videos that he made as well. His shows are stellar.
- Anyone that has seen 'Mikky Ekko' can't deny his talent. His shows are incredibly unique and all different. He just released an EP and although he doesn't have any TBA tour dates up in multiple states across the nation (JEFF), his buzz around town is undeniable. His EP is getting great reviews as well.
- 'Canon Blue' was shown to me as of recently. I'm a late bloomer on this, but it appears that not too long ago he (it's one guy) toured the states both opening and PLAYING with Copenhagen giants 'Efterklang'. He's worked with Cristian Vogel (Radiohead) and some members of 'Grizzly Bear'. And yes he's from Nashville. Again, I'm a late bloomer on this, I guess it's because I keep reading shoddy Nashville blog sites like this one.
- 'Milktooh' , David Condos' new project has a ton of potential, and so does Brooke Waggoner.
- And 'Paper Route'. This band just released a new album that is amazing. They've toured the nation endlessly, sold out shows in Nashville, toured with a band I figured Cream would of noticed called 'Passion Pit', and just finished a video with the guy who has directed bands like 'Arcade Fire' and 'Sigur Ros'. This is a band that the Cream actually has stuff to write about almost every week. But no worries, I go to hype machine and Rolling Stone to find news about them. It seems the rest of the United States knows how to cover our cities real buzz bands better than us.
Matt
Matt, I don't like any of the bands you just mentioned, but I'm not upset that you wrote about them.
Matt S
Maybe that's because it's the first time you've read about them.
Dave Cloud has had interesting things happen to him in the last two years. Has received critical acclaim from the NME, the London Times, WIRE and MOJO magazines, not to mention Vice Magazine. Had a song on a MOJO CD and apparently has had requests for more material to be put on an upcoming Mojo CD. Put out a full length record on Fire Records of London, former and current home to such bands as the Spacemen 3, Neutral Milk Hotel, And Jackie 'O MF. He had Nina Persson of the Cardigans sing on a track of his just last year. Went back to Europe last year, got rave reviews from, of all people, Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye. Was part of the Bud band cast, had his image plastered all over magazines and billboards in europe. was asked to contribute material for a tribute record for Sexton Ming, a punk rock legend. the list could go on and on. I'm not in the band but have managed to hear about this stuff...anyway...
Dear 'to add to it'
Absolutely ! Another artist recognized by the entire world except for his own home town.
Matt
oh matt. . .
I like mikky ekko. . . know the guys from paper route, and think they put on a great show. I used to play for an artist whom dan (canon blue) was playing bass for. . . know and love them all. they're all talented. . . However, these bands don't really have anything to do with the Nashville scene 'scene'. . .their all more newcastle and parliament lights, while this crowd is more pbr and gpc. this is a niche crowd, whom my own band doesn't fit into, or really try to fit into for that matter. . . I enjoy this whole thing for what it is. . . . the most fantastically cynical place in the digital universe!
I like Dave Cloud, I like Brooke Waggoner, I like JEFF The Brotherhood, and I like Paper Route. I have no use for one of the bands Matt lisst but I'm not gonna slag them for getting mentioned.
The Orrall bros have been playing constantly as JEFF since 2003. Maybe six years of hard work and being a generous and contributing part of the Nashville music scene has earned them the amount of chatter they get.
Also, the fact that they play just as hard and enthusiastically for 10 people as they do for 500 is another PLUS for them, not a negative.
This site is mostly mall punk and teenage bullshit. Tell us more about BYOP and Paramore guys. Nevermind Nashvillians like Jeff Coffin, who is playing his ass off on one of the biggest tours in the country. No, you give us the fucking Turf.
Actually, their first album "i like you" came out in 2002. The Nashville Scene's review:
"A mix of jangly math-rock, catchily erratic beats, nonsense lyrics, and expertly deployed white noise bursts and synth blurts. These recordings sound less like dilettantish DIY messarounds than steps in the progression of daunting, omnivorous talents."
That's seven years of love from the Scene, folks. What are they supposed to do, turn on them because they've stuck it out for so long?
That's not a bad thing, that's a good thing.
um. . . .
paramore rarely gets mentioned in a positive light on this site. . . . and THE TURF ARE/WERE GREAT!!!! jeff coffin is a nice dude. .. .but he doesn't apply to this scene. Again, this blog isn't for the type of people who would really care about the kind of artists jeff coffin double sax solos with. mmmkay?
Wow! Anonymous! Are you confused or what?
You like Paramore but not The Turf?
You like BYOP (which Jake and Jamon Orrall started with Jemina and Jonas!) but declare this whole site to be nothing but mall punk and teenage bullshit?
None of that makes sense dude. First time on this blog maybe?
At least you've got a wide range of musical taste. Fave bands are Paramore, BYOP and Jeff Coffin. That's a pretty unlikely bill.
well he would HAVE to be.
But if he had a personality beyond "anonymous" it would be easier for this (me) high school grad to figure out.
ok, my bad (maybe)
the video looks all 80'swashed out, which has to be on purpose, the monster is not scaring anyone but he does want that pizza (!) which I can relate to, and I like how Jamin's hair blows off his head and hovers above for a bit, seemingly pretty fkn arbitrary.
The more I watch it (5, 6?) the more I appreciate it for what it is trying to be. It succeeds.
like it.
I hear what everyone is saying, but I kinda disagree with the last few comments. Cortney Tidwell doesn't fit this apparent 'scene' that's getting press on this blog. I think in the end it's still sadly just who you know. I'm sure she has some connections to someone that links to this. There are two sad realities. Number one, it doesn't come down to talent, and number two, it comes down to who you know. Granted, I think Cortney is amazing. But I think stylistically she could be grouped into the Mikky Ekko and or Paper Route world (as mentioned above). It's just a matter of who these people know. But regardless, I'll keep looking at this dumb blog everyday :)
It genuinely hurts our feelings when you call our blog dumb! We want to be a smart blog. D:
I typically stay away from the trolls, primarily because I have actual work to do. But it's strange to me that people would theorize that knowing us is what gets you coverage. Did you know that music writers get paid to cover what we like? And...that's pretty much all there is to it. I'm quite close with a handful of bands in town that I just don't care for, so I don't write about them. If they have merit and are original and worthwhile, I'll typically assign someone to give them a Critic's Pick. As far as on the blog, I typically just write about local bands I personally like or that are an integral enough part of the Nashville rock scene that they warrant coverage.
I can't believe I'm explaining how a blog works. Just watch the video or don't. By the way, I've never had a single conversation with Cortney Tidwell and I still think her record is incredible.
I stand corrected then.
And we do agree on two things. Covering what is an "integral enough part of the Nashville rock scene" and that Cortney is amazing. I think she is a breathe of fresh air for this city. I guess I would still love to see more love on some other artists in this city. Thank you D. Patrick for commenting, and keep the search for other integral artists in this city. There are plenty.
geez... not one squabble about your Zappa baiting. I rescind my previous complement, cream.
I don't know any of you other than reading this blog and I think that's enough evidence to confirm "I Hear"s statement on it's who you know. That being said, I'm Nigel's biggest fan and would love to meet Mr. Shit Sandwich himself... because he's right on cue 100% of the time.
Getting back to JEFF The Brotherhood then, let's get right to the point. Who do they know or hang out with at the Scene?
My guess. Absolutely no one.
Scene/Cream writers only please respond.
Once again. My guess. Absolutely no one.
"I Hear" you are mislead. It's not who you know, it's what you do. And Courtney Tidwell is part of the same Scene as JEFF The Brotherhood. And she get lot's of Cream blog love. For example:
"Cortney Tidwell proved once again—though it hardly needs proving at this point—that she's a Nashville treasure. She delivered, in the same set, both a gorgeously spot-on rendition of "I Still Miss Someone" (backed on harmony by Alexis Powell of Festival) and a full-throated, cranium-rattling cover of JEFF the Brotherhood's "Screaming Banshee." Brother Jake Orrall, standing up front, said aloud what we were thinking: "That made my year."
see?
