An ugly duckling transforms into a beautiful prom queen. An overweight couch potato becomes a model. A sci-fi nerd morphs into a hardcore rapper. See, dreams really do come true--on MADE!
If you're unaware, Made! is a show on MTV that helps unfortunate (or, I guess, unmotivated) souls (mostly teens) reach their dream of becoming exactly the opposite of whatever it is they are in life. I've seen it for five seconds once I think, which disappoints me, because boy could I be a lot snarkier than this if only I'd had the chance to watch a full episode.
Anyhoo, the show's coming to Rocketown on May 22 to audition unfortunate and/or unmotivated people who wish to defy all odds and be popular, or cool, or pretty, or just not overweight or dorky, or popular or cool or pretty in spite of being overweight and dorky, whichever way the chips fall in these kinds of cases. I saw the link on Nashvillest, and the writers pointed out that they found it hard to dislike a show that helped kids accomplish their dreams. And I respect that, but those Nashvillest ladies are actually nice and stuff and therefore much more charitable than I.
I'm all for self-improvement and stuff, and some of the episodes seem alright--like being class president or a lifeguard. But I would counter that while it's good to motivate people and instill confidence in them, some of these goals are so shallow and vapid that they don't exactly warrant encouragement. I mean, really? Cheerleaders? Models? Prom queens? (Clip above.) This is the height of your high school existence? Why not get really fit and athletic and force yourself to run 10 miles or something, instead of just signing up for the most generic, mainstream and retrograde notion of what a girl can be at the top of the pedestal? What? Too high standards for the channel that brought us Date My Mom?
Anyway, I'd love to hear how Cream readers would like to get "made." I'd love to be a hip-hop star myself. Oh, and I hope all you dorky unmotivated unfortunates don't mind getting up early: auditions are from 8-11 a.m. at the Rocketown coffee bar.

I want to be an astronaut and sing like Luther Vandross. Is it too late for me?
