You catch Australian duo The Veronicas at Rcktwn Saturday night (and read Haruch's analysis of the feminist lite implications of their escapist pop here). But fans of Gossip Girl might be pleased to learn the opener of that show is Taylor Momsen's band Pretty Reckless. Momsen plays Jenny on GG, a petulant, headstrong, and supposedly preternaturally talented fashion designer on the show. Whose character is, like, 15 or something.
My roommates managed to get me into Gossip Girl for a hot minute this last season. Mostly, it was because it reminded me of a sleeker, better-looking and richer 90210. It's literally shot better, with literally better outfits, and the kids are literally richer in the show. This makes all the difference in the world when it comes to a shallow, vapid, fictitious look at what it means to be a teenager in the world, and I applaud them for these minor modifications to the formula. Well-played, Gossip Girl.
Anyway, there's this one GG episode where Jenny and her friends went all guerilla-PR at some rich-people fundraiser and hijacked the place to throw an impromptu runway show to advertise her punky tween designs. The spirit of the idea was alright, even if everything about it was canned cool. (Yes, my new favorite phrase!)
Idolator posted a video clip of Pretty Reckless' debut in New York a few days ago. The song is called "Zombie," and it's got the lyrics, "To all of you who wronged me/ I am / I am / a Zombie," in case you were wondering. They called the band "decent," and I think it's pretty much the most cringe-inducing Concrete Blonde-ish throaty "punky" grossity I've ever heard--and that whole Courtney Love-inspired punk-rock slip dress look isn't helping. You decide.
