You're worried about not having anything to do for Cinco de Mayo tomorrow, aren't you? I know. I can sense it. Don't clear a spot on the couch and fill your Super Soaker with Patrón just yet; there's a party at La Paz you might want to check out. Here's an abridged lineup, in no particular order: How I Became the Bomb Jensen Sportag Coral Castles Shoot the Mountain Mean Tambourines Heypenny Click the flyer to view the rest of the bands. Cover is $10, but that apparently gets you a complimentary pint of beer. The show is sponsored by Lightning 100 and Yazoo, and ironic (as well as earnest) sombreros will no doubt be encouraged. Fun facts about Cinco de Mayo: The day celebrates Mexico's victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862; it is regularly confused with the Mexican Independence Day, which is actually Sept. 16; white people have appropriated Cinco de Mayo as yet another reason to justify getting belligerently drunk; my last employers refused to recognize May 6 as National Call in Hungover Day; I quit my last job.

Noon to 11pm? When are the bands playing? On and off all fucking day? I don't want to waste $10 after work and get stuck without music. Or worse, spend $10 and get stuck with shitty music.

@Ashley:It would be hard not to get stuck with "shitty" music @ this show when all these bands are "extra shitty".

These bands start at 4pm and each have 35 minute sets with 20 minutes between acts.

@sledge. . . who would you suggest I go see? I really like a lot of the bands on this bill but would love to find some local talent of such a caliber so as to make these bands seem 'shitty'

I'll take karaoke and party hopping. Good luck with this though.

@srsly...everyone knows the grinning plowman was the only gnashville band that was ever ever really worth seeing. This indiepop heypenny ect...ect...shit is so far behind it's not even funny.Good luck finding that local talent your looking for because it all moves away.Competing against a scene that wants diluted OF MONTREAL imitation bands grows difficult...

@sledge.. i'm sorry that my booking skills do not meet your expectations. if you are so jaded by our local music scene, why don't you go suck an egg............. On second thought, why don't you come out and suck down a $5 margarita and quit complaining. these bands (and others) are working really hard to provide a little bit of fun to what would be a pretty sad music scene otherwise.
salud!

So Ryan Bruce (2 first names), believes that this particular show at lapaz, which begins at 4pm when most people are still working, is the event that is saving our "pretty sad music scene"?
I didn't realize lapaz was so integral to this city's scene. Ryan Bruce (2 first names)for city council!
I was going to attend this until that last comment.

Nashville = 'sad' music scene if not for indie rock and some DJ's?
Give me a fucking break dude. I got nothing against what's going on at La Paz tonight (except maybe the food), but that was the dumbest comment I've seen in a long long time. It's gonna be a good night, stop putting your foot in your mouth trying to defend it.

@sledge The Grinning Plowman? Really? You're just a cranky old bastard. I'm not into heypenny much myself but the Grinning Plowman as the "the only gnashville band that was ever ever really worth seeing" is kind of a stretch.

@Bawston Sean:I was really being sarcastic little buddy, but your right about one thing,I am a cranky bastard, haha! Not really old though, just old enough to remember when the music scene here was actually about the music bands played and not bands that were more concerned with their image and how they were accepted. There's a lot of good Nashville music,it just doesn't receive a lot of coverage because it's not an imitation of what's on the national indiepop circuit.

sledge. . . . Really?!??!?! More concerned about their image? You need to take a look at some of us. I think we're all pretty lacking in visual aesthetic.

Posted by ryan truso on 05/05/2009 at 11:15 AM

. . . That aside. . . . Isn't it pretty much irrefutable that rock and roll is really part theater, and relies heavily on image?

...and The Ginning Plowman definitely had a look, but I won't hold that against them.

@ryan truso,Yes really ryan.Whether you do a good job or not is your concern.Ha,just joking, but on the serious it,by image I really meant the aspect that deals with a excessive concern with how they are perceived by others and accepted into the fold.

report
Posted by sledge on 05/05/2009 at 11:35 AM

@Bawston Sean...Yeah they had a look, but it was secondary to their music.Casio brings up some relevant points pertaining to this subject in his new article about the tits.

sledge. . . I have to be honest. . . what your saying is silly. musicians have to be concerned about how they are perceived. bands are selling more than just the music. they're purveyors of an experience. Being 'accepted into the fold', or finding an audience, whatever you want to call it is what bands do. Even the most unique and talented artists do this in one way or another.
I know a lot of the guys in these bands though, who honestly are in it because it's fun. Heypenny, Coral Castles, and shoot the mountain are probably some of the most personable, normal guys around, who love making music. So why don't you just give it up, come out and get faced with us? . . . Because we all know it's more about the $5 margaritas than the music anyway.

I like you Ryan, you shouldn't take it so personally when people critique bands that you like and know.I know and agree to a certain extent with what your saying,i'm just saying that it sucks when a band becomes totally about those things. You seem to have personal feelings for these guys, and when you try and put yourself in the limelight you have to expect and get critiqued. You could just play for your ma all day and she could tell you how great you are.I'm sure they're all great guys but they are choosing to make music and put it out to the public.A big part of that being some people won't like it.

Reading comprehension Matt, catch the fever.
I said I didn't like the insinuation that without a few indie rock bands and DJ's, that the music scene was 'sad.' It's Bruce's statement I was bitching about. It's asinine to assume that in Music Fucking City, any one or handful of genre's save the whole town.
I even said I have nothing against the La Paz lineup. I have friends in some of those bands, and it sounded like a good time. Even I can stand indie rock when there's liquor involved, and as someone else said, lots of those musicians are nice people.

It was a little like a being at a field party in the middle of Green Hills, which was kinda bizarre - it was more of a music festival set up than a parking lot show (tents, decent-sized stage, rented lights, drink tickets, etc).
Bands were great, but you know, I already love most of those bands. :)
They should totally do something like that again, but all day on a Saturday next time. It was set up for there to be a LOT of people there and while I think the crowd was pretty decent in reality, being in a giant field made it look like there weren't that many people there.
