Well, if Idolator Said It, It Must Be True: Cage the Elephant Are Harbingers of Doom

As if the '90s revival wasn't bad enough, it looks like it will be ushered in by our very own locals-by-association Cage the Elephant. Gross. I've come to grips with some of the more bass-ackwards shit that Nashville produces, like, say, teacher-student sex and guns on playgrounds, but if some sort of major label feedin' frenzy happens and every asshole with a flannel and a copy of Ten gets a record deal, I'm throwing in the towel and moving to Paducah. Except that CTE are from Kentucky, so it'll probably be worse there. Fuck.

I think this quote from k-rex pretty much says it all: "Those weren't douchebags. Those were kids. Douchebags are bigger."

I couldn't make it all the way through that. Lame.

Talk about a Beck influence gone wrong. I watched a couple videos of this awfully awful band last night and was left perplexed by the alt-rock version of dancing the robot that seems to be the singer's stock in trade.

Idolator should have listened to more songs and skipped the naive snark. That video is not representative. CTE is a great band. Period.

this reviewer is lame, he never makes a a good point the whole review. NASHVILLE CREAM YOU SUCK! no wonder nashville is alway behind on good up and coming bands. so why don't you go suck another murfreesboro bands dick! they all seem to impress you , but for some reason they're all so good they never make it out of nashville. Cage The Elephant are going to be a great band for as long as they make music. on the other hand all the lame shit bands this blog promotes will more than likely break up and then the band "leader" will end up writing shit songs for shit country artist and it'll prob go something like honky tonk badonkadonk

even though the argument above was amazing.
I don't think I will be buying their record. I had the unfortunate experience of seeing this group live once. And, it was just that, unfortunate.

Great band; they actually love their fans; no signs of anger rock; unique in all their songs. Is there a reason Maloney rhymes with "Baloney"?

report
Posted by Henry on April 29, 2009 at 10:11 PM

let's see.....refreshing, different, electric are words that come to mind, as opposed to the cookie cutter BS, noize that the alt stations play now. I thought all Maloney's taste was in his mouth...now I'm sure it is! And without jimmy and bryan the posers at any of their future concerts that leaves room for 2 more real "fans" Rock On.

There is a reason why people are A&R's. There is a reason why every label wanted to sign them. There is a reason, just have to go find it and if you can’t find it... then more than likely your career for finding bands and developing them is a poor choice. It takes something special to break out of Nashville and Cage had it all along.
Shit talking like this usually comes from insecurities, negativity, and jealously. I wish everyone luck in their endeavors in the music business but with attitudes like this you won’t make it very far. I Hope more bands like this will be able to break out of the Nashville scene.

Ryan pretty much nails it on the head. Nashville Cream, you guys are here because you are passionate about the city and the music within it right? aren't you guys here to keep us all informed and to promote the artists/musicians? Well regardless if you like the music, shouldn't you be supportive that someone made it out of Nashville and has a VERY promising future ahead of them?
Also, based on what i read here daily, your musical tastes are not all that. Every band I see you guys promoting never does anything more than generate a slight buzz in town for about five minutes. The bands that do make it seem to find their way into the crosshairs of the cream's bush-league commentary. What gives?
PS...Maloney, you are a cock-hungry cum-gobblin. Your writing and reviews are fucking garbage. Get over yourself clown.

Cage The Elephant are just another band getting pub instead of the Features, so I hate them by default. If I didn't, it might matter that I listened to some of their record and that it didn't make me want to assault my stereo. Then again, it's not something I would be found cleaning the house to. In fact, I like local frauds KOL better -- at least they have the decency not to be grunge. Grunge was part of the reason I was getting all my music from across the drink at that time...
It's also good that when Cream readers don't like somebody's opinion, they call them gay.
Also, props to k-rex. That was epic.

And I don't have support shit for dick, I'm an American gawddamnit.

That may be true about the band, but they're not from Nashville.

Should not their home town in Kentucky be happy for them and not Nashville by default?
I am not a huge fan of the features either so I spose it works out for my argument.
The Cream and or Scene does not do things to "hurt" bands. They poke fun, play with, molest some. They blow, adore, and fondle others. It is the nature of this beast, and I for one find it entertaining. I don't always agree, but I don't have to. I happen to, in this instance, agree with dear Sean. Cage the Elephant, in my view, is not good. Not at all. In my view, it's a waste of time to hear or see them in any instance. Other's may view that different, especially if they date/drink/know them personally.
Short Version:
sean's right.
the cream is a beast worth breeding.
haruch is a demon.
d patrick is a demon.
sullivan is a demon.
the good kind.

They're certainly as good as most of the bands the Scene lavishes praise upon. (And better than a few.) I liked the videos too. The burning hub cap made me happy for some reason and the 'In One Ear' video was fun to watch. Good AD's on those sets.
Musically its wholly unremarkable. Heavily produced so it sounds tight and whatnot, but really its the same whiteboy-rock three chord guitar jams with some tasty but very predictable drum production. The lyrics were better than average.
The singer's antics annoy me too, but I don't like most singers anyway. Especially those who do the whole 'look how out of control I am!' schtick. We get it, you're wild and craaazy!
I could have fun at a concert if I was drunk and ready to rock, but really the whole thing strikes me as 'safe' major label material suitable for mass consumption. Nothing we haven't heard plenty of times before.

Bowling Green-Nashville....what's the difference? Murfreesboro isn't nashville either! but you folks are on murf's nuts! Cage got their start playing in Nashville two years ago...almost three. I bet if AutoVaughn blew up you would all start dogging them cuz they are from Indiana and blah blah blah. KOL are frauds blah blah blah. Why cant you people be happy for them? Everyone here is so gahdamn nitpicky..i bet most of you guys are musicians whose bands didn't get very far so you degrade everyone who gets somewhere. fucking losers.

This is supposed to be funny because it linked from that St. Vincent clip. This is hilarious. Cream, you are years ahead of us with your bashing of every band possible that succeeds and has ties to Nashville. We're so very proud of your sarcasm and grade B writing. Maybe we should start pointing out the obvious. The only people that read this stuff is bored Nashville musicians. Unlike most other blogs that have followers from around the globe. So it looks like you're apparently just like the musicians you bash here. Grade fucking B. Get a life.
