In this video interview, Peter Buck and Mike Mills of R.E.M. talk to TNN cameras for the show "Country Notes," shortly after the release of Life's Rich Pageant--quite possibly my favorite R.E.M. album, or at least the one I've listened to the most. They also talk about meeting the Coug! (As you'll recall, both Buck and Mills were in town recently for the Robyn Hitchcock show.)
"Country Notes" is before my time, and even if it wasn't, I never had cable, but frequent Scene contributor Michael McCall recognized the interviewer as Greg Crutcher, who has done video work for Travis Tritt and Steven Curtis Chapman to name but two. According to the bio on his website, Crutcher "co-hosted and co-produced a highly-rated entertainment news magazine. 'Country Notes,' a hip, youth-oriented weekly half hour offered reports on country music's cutting edge artists and issues." As McCall notes, this is the raw footage, only a fraction of which probably made it to the original broadcast. Enjoy!

...funny this was posted. I don't listen to them very much anymore although I was a huge fan for many years. For some reason last night I started youtubing some of their early videos and came across this gem.

Stipe was clearly very close to firing his manager after agreeing to do this and obviously the audience was expecting something a little funkier. I do give them kudos for playing that song instead of a more upbeat one from the record (i.e. Rockville, Pretty Persuasion).
