Tommy and the Whale Call It Quits?

Anyone who went to The Basement to check out KinderCastle last night probably noticed that Tommy and the Whale were absent from the bill, with Space Capone headlining instead. There's a pretty good reason for that: Rumor has it that T and the W have broken up. No confirmation on their 'Space or anything yet, but the rumors are relatively substantiated. And "relatively substantiated" is good enough for us around here. RIP, T & the Dub.

Are they really broken up or are they just planning on getting back together under a different name with a new style? (I believe Arkitekt was their original incarnation) I dug the Shot For The Moon album but it didn't seem they did much to support it. I've also heard that Tommy is getting hitched, maybe the prospect of taking care of a family has killed yet another rock 'n' roll dream.

I like the insinuation that one would have gone to see KinderCastle and not the original (or eventual) headliner.

tommy and the whale - the whale and the wave - noah and the whale - the whale - white whale - or, the whale - sleep whale - whale - said the whale...
...8 whale bands left, at least. no need to alert the endangered species program.

From what I gather, a lot of T & the W fans were already aware that dudes had canceled and therefore didn't show up. Thusly, most people who still showed were there for KC. I guess that's a rather involved insinuation, though.
God, why am I still at work checking blog comments?

Kindercastle played an awesome set, as did Space Capone - who was an absolute champ tojump in at the last minute. Speaking of Sapce Capone, that wasa live rehearsal for his show tonight at some Mansion House Party thing on the Eastside. NOt sure of any other details - but in any event, it is always a good show.

Ashley,
No matter what order they play in, or who is headlining... Kindercastle always brings the majority of the audience.
The Mercy Lounge knows.

Mr. Toofpaste, If there weren't 37 people in Kindercastle everybody would realize that a band named after a daycare center, with Kermit the frog for a lead singer is totally gay and that they are not even good enough to be called a bastard of E.L.O. (though I do believe that that is a better band name). The only thing that the Mery Lounge knows is that Nashville is full of alcoholic hipsters with no taste of their own.

report
Posted by Beefstew on March 28, 2009 at 11:17 AM

i don't think it's especially fair to single out hipsters for having "no taste of their own". while hipsters like to create the illusion they're among the more enlightened percentile of the mass populous, most of them are no more individualistic than your average job. Besides, now that we have both an American Apparel and Urban Outfitters, how can you even tell the difference between hipsters and your average twenty-something consumer these days?
as for Kindercastle, i kind of see them as one of those fancy bubblegum machines with all the gears and ramps and levers and shit the gumball rolls through before you get it. it's a well-functioning, elaborate machine with lots of bells and whistles intended to be dazzling, but in the end, you still get something you're just gonna chew up and spit out 20 minutes later.

Beefstew,
There are actually only 2 people in Kindercastle.
What's your problem with Sesame Street?
And I'm not sure why a "totally gay" sexual orientation has anything to do with it. Why do you hate gay people?

You know, I was thinking about what was said about Kindercastle earlier, and the comments made about Tommy and the Whale and was wondering what it would be like if we got behind our fair city's music scene - regardless of what our tastes dictate what we like or dislike. Imagine we were patriotic about any band/artist that is trying to do something that they are passionate about? It would be pretty awesome, right? Kindercastle are doing something seriously great - regardless of whether it is my fav music style or not. Tommy and the Whale - did some fantastic shows and people really got a kick out of it.
Music in this town really is awesome and we all too often put the boot in (myself included) when someone is getting more love than some other band that we think deserves it.
Many of us will be the first to say "they're from Nashville" if they are kicking ass outside of town. But, while they are here - it is easy to jump on the soap box and have a dig. The reasons may be:
a) because you think that a band should be working harder
b) you don't dig it, and you see people going to the shows (hipsters if you will) and giving them kudos, when you value someone else much more who isn't getting the love
c) you just think they are sloppy as crap
d) you are jaded because YOU aren't where you want to be
I hope it is both (a) and the next one
(e) you want Nashville to escape the rep for being gospel, country and singer/songwriter only and become known all over the place for being THE place where the best bands/artists are bred.
I have lived in a handful of cities across the world, and if I took 20 of the bands in this town, who are perceived as OK and placed them in other places - they would probably be kicking ass and loved on in those cities.
Let's put the claws away kids and start to enable these guys in town to do great stuff and more importantly feel supported by their community.
As for Tommy and the Whale - they are taking time out to work on other things that require their attention right now. Thomas is working on a project called Tallest Trees, Jamie is doing road gigs and Kai is working on his own material, as well as working with great folks like Carey Ott and Bobby Bare Jr.
Tommy isn't stopping what he is doing, but more importantly looking at The Whale and working out what is next in terms of direction for the project. Rather than playing the same tunes time and time again, he is looking to take it up a notch - as are the other guys in their projects. All these guys are talented as hell and are more likely to come out really promising stuff, and that is something I look forward to.
I don't know about you guys, but I am trying to get out and hear as much music as I can and love it or hate it (taste wise), I love knowing people are not sitting on their ass but actually doing something they love.
That is what I will do a shot of Jack to - how about you?

I don't think Movement Nashville sucks.
I applaud the fact that they manage to be so cohesive and, in fact, movement-like. They are constantly having shows and hyping their people. Which is kind of the point I guess.
Admittedly I don't particularly care for most of their artists. A little too predictable, but that's just my opinion, and it may very well resemble a certain orifice. Deano's a hyperactive poster yes, but in person he's fucking hilarious and quite a pleasant chap. And you can't say he doesn't work hard for local music.
Just don't thank his nation for inventing the Bloomin' Onion. He doesn't appreciate that.

Thanks for weighing in here, Burrito. I think you hit the nail on the head. You don't have top like everything you hear around town, but giving credit where credit is due helps to build community. There is a ton of stuff I don't dig in town, including music and the abomination known as the Bloomin Onion, but I wanna be the guy to tip my hat and say - they dig a friggin' good job regardless of whether I would put them in my "Kickin ass with Creed" playlist on iTunes.

From my close source, the other members are just too busy with other projects for Tommy and the Whale to keep going in the near future, but they may be getting back together one of these days in the future to make some more great music for us.
Also, I agree with Dean, instead of talking shit about other bands, why don't you just use that energy to support the bands in town that you do like. In the process you'll also look like less of an ass.
