Martina McBride Gets Her Meme On & Other Glorious Bits of 'Net

Posted by D. Patrick Rodgers on Thu, Mar 26, 2009 at 2:58 PM

So you want to know what local uber-hipster artist has been reading up on Hipster Runoff's guide to memefying your own band? Martina McBride. You might recognize the "Shine" Man: That's Garland Gallaspy, local man-about-town, film guy and (former?) WRVU deejay. There's more absurd footage of him running around town, shouting at people through a megaphone and serving folks eggs here, here and here. The album, as you can see, is now out.

But seriously, if you haven't read that Hipster Runoff piece, it's pretty amusing and worth perusing. Snippet:

The modern band is not just about 'music.' The modern band must successfully win over fans by finding effective methods to generate themselves into a meme-source worth following. You are more than just your music. You are an aesthetic. You are the news that bros everywhere need to read about. You need to picture a world where you have at least 20K Twitter followers who are eager to follow your lifestream on a meme-to-meme basis.

So you see? Being "Internet" successful in the "Internet" Age isn't about having awesome songs, but rather...say...having a hip, DayGlo baby or getting stung by a scorpion.

I'd like to see a billboard of this for a real Ouroboros experience.
