Guess where the Spin is going to be on June 6. Being that we want to make trade fair, more than likely we'll be at the Sommet Center. That's where England's not-so-newest-anymore hitmakers Coldplay will be performing on their--now extended--Viva La Vida tour. Despite my undying love for recent Cream punching bag U2, I am NOT a Coldplay fan--although it's nice to know that Radiohead could have been the biggest band in the world had they wanted to be. I'm not really a hater either.
The feeling I get when "Clocks" or "Yellow" or "The Scientist" comes on the radio isn't much different than the feeling I get when I set foot into the Banana Republic at Green Hills mall: I get a little uncomfortable. A slight tingling of douchebumps, and then I realize it's not THAT bad. And in the same way that I'd happily capitalize on a Banana Republic gift certificate if I were to get one get for Chanukah, I'll happily capitalize on free tickets to see Coldplay--or as I call them, the poncy-pale superstar Bono-be (conscience + insufferability / lack of originality x falsetto = Bono factor) and three other faceless guys. Tickets go on sale here Sat. at 10am. They range in price from $49.50-$97.50.
Be warned though: If Chris Martin brings Jack White onstage to play with the band on a cover of "Hotel Yorba" and introduces it as "the greatest song ever written," he's probably lying. I remember watching Coldplay trot out former Verve singer Richard Ashcroft for a performance of "Bittersweet Symphony" during the worldwide broadcast of 2005's Live 8 debacle, introducing the song as such. Two years later I saw them on "Austin City Limits," during which they brought out Michael Stipe for a performance of "Nightswimming." Guess how Martin introduced it.
Showing 1-30 of 30
This boring band has tricked the world into listening to mom music. Wake up!
At least Sommet has a ton of shows now. It seems like that place was struggling as the GEC a couple of years ago. I know our local economy needs these kinds of shows so I'm not complaining.
Best slideshow ever (on the right): Daisy Duke's Contest At Silverados. Highlarious
If you haven't figured it out yet, Gold hates every band except his own....and U2 (who sucks by the way).
I agree with Ethan. At least the Sommet center is getting some shows, The Ryman has been downgraded to a step above Zanie's. So much for the new GM they hired last year.
HA! Check out the brooding eyes on D. Pats! That fucker's dying to go solo.
I don't like living in a world where Coldplay commands $49.50-$97.50 and Tim Carroll, Todd Snider, and Jerry Jeff walker are not household names. It's just plain creepy.
Coldplay were great at the Starwood shed a few years ago. Surprisingly so in fact.
God forbid we get a huge international touring act to hit Nashville. That can't be good for anyone. We should probably picket any "corporate" act who has the oil-for-blood money to fund a touring budget that could rent out the Sommet.
That way we can continue to out-cool one another with snarky elitism about obscure and yet ultimately shitty records.
I'm not even that big a Coldplay fan, but you'd think the requisite cynicism on this blog could be stifled with a broader view of what a successful Nashville date for Coldplay could mean for other acts debating on Music City.
Or keep driving to Louisville to see Arcade Fire and St. Louis to see Radiohead. It's cooler that way.
But those bands are awful so why would I travel to see them?
say what you want. coldplay sold almost 7 million albums (physical and digital) last year. that is pretty friggin' incredible and is exactly why they can charge $50 on the low-end for tickets. Don't worry. If you can't afford $50, another 18,000 folks will be happy to.
I'm glad I got to see them up front at the Ryman when i did.
BTW, kudos on the picture. I totally didn't realize the switcheroo until I read the caption.
Anyone else notice that Mastodon aren't stopping here?
i remember i saw them at the Ryman on their Rush of Blood tour, and it was one of the best shows i'd seen yet. but that was before their last two albums bored me to tears. i'm over coldplay. i'm impatient for wilco to book another date at the ryman.
That Adam Gold pic is so masterful, in every detail.
Oh, man.
A little embarrassed that we're actually whiter than Chris Martin.
You guys are so alternative it hurts.
Tragically hip.
I guess all that adds up to = haters.
"I am NOT a Coldplay fan... I'm not really a hater either."
Reading comprehension is really on the down swing in this country.
Were you at the last show Mastodon played here?
When did they play here? I've only been a fan for a year or two so...
Really I just want them to play 'Leviathan' front to back. In my basement.
They played at Rockettown with Converge and the Sword not long after Blood Mountain was released. I caught the tour in Knoxville. Mastodon opened their set at the Scion Rock Fest with "Hearts Alive," and it was karrraaazzzy.
Matt, that was Priestess, not The Sword. Good show, terrible room.
Oops. Yes, Priestess. The Sword would've been a much bigger deal.
these people just dont see the beautifil artistic talent in Coldplay
and U2 definetly does suck
Bono is a turd.
Ian, you see [sic] "beautifil artistic talent" in Coldplay, but you think U2 sucks? Ur dumb. That's like saying "I love handjobs, can't stand blow jobs".
Coldplay is a wonderful band, but that is besides the point because my opinion does not matter. What matters is the creative power that comes from the art the band developed. It is great that the artists stretched the boundaries, made people like you discuss it and be passionate about what the title was and what it conveys.
