500 Days of Summer: Watch This Stinker of a Trailer

Posted by D Patrick Rodgers on Wed, Mar 18, 2009 at 3:04 PM

Yes, yes...I know. It's a slow news day. But my cubicle buddy Caleb showed me this damn thing, and I just couldn't pass it up.

*Smiths reference: check.

*Sex Pistols reference: check.

*Cutsie little dirty "anal" joke: check.

*Total indie-cred passable soundtrack, including Regina Spektor, Black Lips, Feist, Spoon and ironic choices such as Hall & Oates and Patrick Swayze: check.

*Insufferable pillow-talk scenes and insistence that (even though it clearly is) it's not a "love story": check.

*Foul-mouthed, goofy-haired best friend: check.

*Dance sequence featuring a cartoon bird?!?: check.

*Totally abstract, pseudo-meaningful dialogue about, you know, life: check.

*A busload of Zooey Deschanels: double check.

God, it's Garden State all over again. Does anyone else find this vaguely insulting? I anticipate a spike in The Best of the Smiths sales (much like what happened to The Shins after Zach Braff planted his pouty-lipped kiss on the face of cinema for all eternity). It's the type of film that's designed to make people feel smart for having seen Sid and Nancy or knowing who Joy Division are. I really hate for the term "douchebumps" to be used twice on the blog in one day, but this trailer is making it difficult. I guess this is the type of art people make after they get engaged to Ben Gibbard. I still love you, Zooey.

Whatever. I'd rather watch this movie 500 days in a row than sit through Watchmen again. But then again, I kind of liked Garden State so I guess that makes me a douchebump. And anyway, I thought the teaser trailer was kind of cute: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILCB_f0IIyI

Aw, man! Really?? Have you read Watchmen? I'd be interested to know what you disliked about the film.
And I don't think one can actually be a douchebump; only get them. So you're totally in the clear. But the bit where 3rd Rock says, "Why didn't [past boyfriends] work out?" and She & Him responds with "What always happens. Life." That didn't make you cringe? Not even just a little?

I'm sorry, Not a Hater, but if the trailer is bad the teaser is worse.
(500) days of...indie cliche.

Almost everyone I know who has read Watchmen has hated the movie. Almost. I haven't read it or seen it because I live under layers and layers of rocks.

The Nashville Film Festival openers are rarely very good. The Deal last year was an average comedic premise that devolved into a tired formula and My Secret Record was the most boring, conflict-free music documentary I've ever seen (I wanted to make a solo album, so I did. THE END). But they do feature high profile actors and it's a nice show for the TV cameras before the meat of the festival starts the next day.
Atleast that insane sounding Shatner ballet movie is screening. And the Gogol Bordello documentary, Non-Stop, should be great too.
(Also I didn't like Watchmen that much, and I own that huge 10 pound Absolute edition of the graphic novel. I didn't hate it, but when I left the movie theater, I had no interest in seeing it again like I did Dark Knight.)

Saw the Watchmen on a day off in Ft Worth at an 80's time capsule super AMC and had such low expectations that I actually kinda enjoyed watching it. Of course, it goes without saying that anyone that might be interested should just read the real deal. The thing that I've now discovered I hate the most about this adaptation is... having to defend such a fun/great/involved read to people who have never heard of it and, worse yet, are quick to assume the medium suggests one will only get the stereotypical men in tights experience. There was a time when slow motion was really f*ing expensive. Oh well.
