Superdrag at Grimey's; Superdrag in my Adolescence

Posted by D. Patrick Rodgers on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 2:24 PM

The above video is Superdrag playing "Everything Will Be Made Right" from their latest, Industry Giants, and it comes to us courtesy of YouTube user theweigelfamily. While I couldn't track down any further videos from their in-store at Grimey's last week, there are a couple of clips out there in the 'Netz from their Exit/In show Saturday night (here and here).

I won't pretend I have the same unbridled, gleeful obsession with Superdrag as Maloney and others, but I must say they had quite an impact on me in my formative music-aficionado years. I had a chance to meet the dudes from the 'Drag last weekend at a Lake Fever Session. While I briefly considered telling John Davis that "Sucked Out" was one of the first rock songs I ever taught myself on guitar--yes, I'm that young--I instead just listened to Tom Pappas tell a story about talking to Tommy Lee on the phone one time. Apparently, Lee totally confused Superdrag for another certain mid-'90s powerpop four-piece.

"Oh, bro! I totally loved that video you dudes did with the long legs!" Yeah, and you're the one-armed drummer from that one band, right? Band recognition fail, Tommy Lee. Band recognition fail.

Got to be honest. I'm a huge 'Drag fan, and I'm into John Davis solo stuff, but the music on this new album is completely underwhelming to me. I'm really glad the boys are having a good time and getting out there and rocking it, but I'm just not feeling it. Everyone else seems to think it's the greatest record ever, though.
