I'm off to Austin for SXSW, and so far I'm armed with at least a vague idea of some Nashville bands playing and a twinkle in my eye at the possibility of coming home with a new musical crush. Some contenders for that include the San Diego band Wavves, whose fuzzy punk instantly reminds me of No Age. Holla! Of course, I wouldn't be me if I didn't look long and hard for some kind of croony, Brit pop-ish band with Robert Smith vocals to gush over. Actually, I didn't even look that hard, and I discovered Cut Off Your Hands, a New Zealand band who get the job done just as nicely even though that's only kinda British and dude only kinda sounds like Robert Smith. Whatever, I'm easy. And for ye olde kicks let's just say I have to try to see Hot Leg, the new band from former Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins. I'm not saying it'll be any good, I'm just saying I have to see it.
But back to Nashville: In addition to the usual Nashville suspects, the Naked Without Us folks are actually throwing SXSW's first fashion show as part of the Red Gorilla free stuff going on alongside the festival. It's Thursday, March 19, from noon to 4 p.m. at Nuno's upstairs. There will be bands (Used Computers, Sterling Y, et al.), DJs and models wearing the fashions of local designers Shannon Lovelea, Amanda Valentine, Only 50, Anne Thessin and White Rabbit.
Mostly, I wanna see what this economic maelstrom will do to the spirit of indie rock. At the very least, I expect to be fighting off the droves just to score some free beer and tacos at the day parties.
