Who here likes Stax? How about Norway? In that case, NPT has just the thing for you on Thursday evening. Sweet Soul: Stax/Volt Revue--Live in Norway 1967 will be airing at 7 p.m. on March 12. From the good folks over at NPT Channel 8:

[The film] features performance footage from the last leg of the Stax/Volt Revue's European tour -- a rare package tour of artists from the legendary record label. Otis Redding delivers jaw-dropping versions of "Shake," "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," the only known filmed concert performance of "Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)," and a staggering, six-minute version of "Try A Little Tenderness," during which he comes back for four encores! This is one show you won't want to miss!

A copy of the Otis Redding Live in London and Paris album showed up at the office not too long ago. The shows featured on the disc were also recorded during the European Stax/Volt Revue tour of '67, and I must say Booker T. and the MGs hold it down. They just don't make house bands like that anymore. Though, having seen the Dap-Kings a handful of times, I must admit those dudes manage to come awfully close. Well, I'm going to stop talking about Soul before I reveal how meager my body of knowledge truly is and someone like Maloney schools my sorry ass. Tune in Thursday night.

If you know enough to be excited about the Oslo concert, you don't have to make excuses. I'm recording it and will probably watch it 400 times.

If you love this version of "Sweet Soul: Stax/Volt Revue Live in Europe 1968," you may also purchase your own copy of the full-length version at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music's online web store at www.staxmuseum.com. The Stax Museum is a 17,000 square foot, lively, fun, informative, and engaging experience located at the original site of Stax Records in Memphis!

Haven't been to the Stax Museum in a few years, but it's one of the greatest places on earth.
I wish they would make t-shirts that don't have the damn Stax Museum's website address on the back, though. Beautiful t-shirts with both the "early" logo with the spinning records and the "late" logo with the snapping fingers, sullied by a stupid URL printed right between the shoulder blades.

Thanks for mentioning this. It really is a great show. Question: Is Steve Cropper the coolest man on the planet? If not, who is?

I love Steve Cropper, and he's probably one of the hundred coolest guys in the history of the world. But part of the genius of Stax is that he was the least cool guy in the MGs, or for that matter the Mar-Keys.

Joe, sorry to burst your bubble, but Corrado Savarino is the coolest man on the planet. Cropper is up there though.

It was a question, Jack. Meant to engage the community in conversation. Why do you hate me so much?
Thanks for tuning in d. patrick.
