Jennifer O'Connor Wants to Eat Hot Chicken

The first time I ever ate at Sylvan Park Restaurant, I told my dining companion, "This reminds me of the kind of place you end up eating at when you're on tour." I'm not sure what it is about the place, but it just feels like a between-sound-check-and-the-gig kind of meal. Maybe it's the wood paneling. Or the single-serving margarine. Whatever it is, eating there reminds me of life on the road.

When I interviewed New York singer-songwriter Jennifer O'Connor she was between shows, driving across Arizona. "I've never been to the Southwest before," she said, "so I've been trying all the different kinds of chili. It's great." And then she hit on one of the great truths of playin' in a travelin' band: "[The food is] one of the best things about touring."

Sure, sometimes the food is actually the worst thing about touring--I've eaten more truckstop heat-lamp "burritos" than I'd care to remember--but essentially she's right. Naturally, her next question was where to eat while she was in Nashville. I told her that since she's friends with the good people in Yo La Tengo--hot chicken lovers (and immortalizers) that they are--she should make a point of paying Prince's a visit.

"That's where I need to go, then," she said. (Of course, I gave her the standard travel advisory and recommended perhaps trying the mild.)

Here's a song from O'Connor's new album, Here With Me. Check her out tonight at The End. Haley Bonar and Caitlin Rose open the show. Maybe we can all plan tomorrow's hot chicken run while we're there.

FYI - Prince's is open until about 3AM on weekends; don't know about weeknights. Also, they don't open until noon.
And Bolton's hot chicken in NOT an acceptable substitute for Prince's.

well bp, i stand corrected. yay! for a while there they were definitely closing around 6pm, which is just way too early.
as far as bolton's goes, it's different for sure, but just as good. some people prefer it. for a variety of reasons. there's no reason to be ALL CAPS about it.
