I encountered the music of Shake It Like a Caveman by pure chance last fall; I had stopped by Springwater one night (to visit some disreputable acquaintance, no doubt), and stayed to see Caveman play a set of hilarious, exuberant and gritty garage-stomp. Instantly, this music spoke to me. "There aren't," I thought to myself, "enough bands around playing minimal, stripped-down, rhythmic garage rock influenced by Mississippi hill country music, emulating the style of slide guitar masters like Mississippi Fred MacDowell and R.L. Burnside."
I still feel this way, so I was pleased to hear they're back in town tonight.
I use the word "them" loosely; Shake It Like a Caveman is Blake Burris, an Asheville-based musician who's been performing under that name since 2005. He drums with his feet and accompanies his own songs (and the occasional Burnside cover) on slide guitar and harmonica. If you're dubious about the one-man-band thing--as I would be, had I not seen it with my own eyes--it's easy enough to assuage your doubts. You can hear some songs on his Myspace page, or watch the video below.
The show is at Springwater Supper Club, and they don't list any other bands on the bill, so we should all try to show up in a timely manner.

Oh yeah? What about:
- The Black Keys
- The White Stripes
- Black Diamond Heavies
- North Mississippi All-Stars
- Bob Log III
- Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera...
Seems to me like there's more than enough of that going around.
