Sail on, Silver Jews: David Berman Calls It Quits

Posted by Steve Haruch on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 1:46 PM

A little sooner than expected (at least by the Cream), David Berman has decided to end the Silver Jews. In a post on the band's Drag City message board, Berman said yesterday that it's time to move on.

Yes I cancelled the South American shows. I'll have to see the ABC Countries another way.

I guess I am moving over to another category. Screenwriting or Muckraking.

I've got to move on. Can't be like all the careerists doncha know.

I'm forty two and I know what to do.

I'm a writer, see?

Cassie is taking it the hardest. She's a fan and a player but she sees how happy i am with the decision.

I always said we would stop before we got bad. If I continue to record I might accidentally write the answer song to Shiny Happy People.

As you'll recall, Berman told our own D. Patrick Rodgers back in December:

one thing i can tell you is that the silver jews credo "what we do is symbolic" is definitely in play here. I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't the last silver jews show.

In a follow-up interview, Berman said that he planned to "bury the band." (Look for Patrick's feature in next week's print edition.)

I'm gonna have to wear a slicker when I go to Grimey's this week. This will reduce the amount of times Pitchfork mentions Nashville by some 30-50%.

More than that, I'd say.

If he wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't the last show, then shouldn't this be surprising?

Just because he wouldn't have been surprised if it hadn't been the last show doesn't necessarily mean he would be surprised if it were.
I think.

Makes sense to me. I recently bought Lookout Mountain Lookout Sea and I think it sucks. I've listened to the whole record and can't find a song i like.

I like the last song and the first song a bunch. Took a few listens for me to get into the rest of the record.

LOMLOS easily has half a dozen great songs on it. It felt like a natural maturation to my ears. I love that record. "Suffering Jukebox", "We Could Be Looking for the Same Thing"... and the one inspired by Jeremy Blake esp... Anyone who doesn't like it can just put "Punks In the Beerlight" from the previous record on repeat.
