So last night I was doing some late-night tube-viewing--in a state of mind that might precipitate late-night tube-viewing, if you catch my drift--and just as all of memories of Nashville's beloved Los Straitjackets were about to vanish forever from the deepest recesses of my brain, they appeared on screen. I mean, it makes sense that these dudes are still touring. They've built up a substantial fan base amongst surf rockers and rockabilly types over the years. But seeing them on
Late Night, well, it just felt random.
Anyhow, yes, they still wear wrestling masks. And yes, they still play shit that, to me, is virtually indistinguishable from Dick Dale, The Ventures and the like. I suppose there will always be a market for goofy, anonymous players of reverb-y guitar. God bless America. Los Straitjackets
are touring, but mainly in Europe and not anywhere near Nashville. You can see their performance from last night
here, but you'll have to skip the first 35 minutes of the show and this link will likely expire in a week or two. Personally, I think the black-masked guitarist is way better than the white-masked one. Like, embarrassingly so.
