We've told you about The Billy Goats and Quiet Entertainer before, but in this week's Scene Sean Maloney goes in-depth with the outsiders' outsiders who've made their own hip-hop scene at Cafe Coco. Here's a clip from the article, discussing The Billy Goats:
DJ Eticut, MC Iller and 24/7 bump party rap for people that own Scrabble dictionaries and crates of dollar-bin vinyl: wordy, nerdy and rowdy. Iller is the most ribald rapper on the scene, never getting too blue but certainly saying some things that would make your mama blush--with his tongue planted firmly in cheek. Humor and satire play a large role in the flows that fly around Coco, to the point where The Tennessean's Mark Mays sorta questioned Nerd's sincerity, but The Goats are the champions of fun. They're more like the kids wildin' out in the back of science class, Bunsen-burning back issues of Mad magazine.
And here are some choice tracks to bop along to, if you please:

Of course, you can also go check it for yourself; on the Coco slate for this week: Quiet Entertainer Friday night, E.T. late Friday. And yo, check out the slideshow for more photos.
Showing 1-7 of 7
Haruch, explain the whole "outsider's outsiders" semantics. Outside of what? Most of these people have been part of the musical landscape for years.
Not yet, but I'll grab an issue around lunchtime and check it, perhaps my question is answered there.
PS- I love 7's new album. Club loverz!
What's the best time to show up for these shows? I went once only to find an empty room. I don't see a time listed in the story.
burrito, I link to the story in my post, if you want to read it on the web nets.
What Time??, the information I have says Quiet Entertainer et al. starts at 8 p.m. on Friday (though if I had to guess I'd say it might get started a little later than that), and E.T. is slated for 11 p.m. on Saturday.
its nice to see these guys get publicity. i fell in with this crew two and a half years ago and was completely taken by surprise. as someone disgusted by radio-played rappers with their deprecating messages, this scene was a breath of fresh air. our scene has had its growing pains but hip-hop is a living, breathing force at the back bar at Coco. anyways, if you want more of this brand of hip-hop, this crew runs Cafe Coco Saturday nights 11-2! E.T. (www.myspace.com/etgotsoul) hosts the 2nd & last Saturday of the month with an open-mic freestyle, and Spoken Nerd (www.myspace.com/spokennerd) does the 1st Saturday of the month.
