Wilco to Release DVD Feat. Ryman Performance; Sad Grampas Pumped

Say what you will, but I am a Wilco fan. Nearly every bit of their material. Even Sky Blue Sky. Even with Nels Cline's overzealous noodling. Even though my ladyfriend once heard me listening to said album and asked me why I was into "sad grampa elevator music."

Well, of all the shows Wilco could have selected for their forthcoming DVD Ashes of American Flags, Tweedy & Co. have included their "career-spanning" performance at the Ryman in February as well as another show at Tulsa's Cain Ballroom for the band's first-ever concert DVD. Ashes of American Flags is due out in February or March, and according to Billboard, Wilco just might play here again in the coming months:

According to a newsletter sent to fans, Wilco will play "a handful of gigs" in the southern U.S. in April, to be followed by an extensive tour of Spain in May and then "the usual summer hijinks with a new record and gigs everywhere imaginable."

Southern U.S.? That's totally us. Rejoice, sad grampas--the Tweedy bird will be here soon to lull us all gracefully into eternal sleep.

Bless Wilco Indeed.
To be a Wilco nerd, it was mostly Tweedy doing the noodling on the record, Nels does it live however, and when he does it, it is not noodling.

not trying to bust your chops, p. daddy, but couldn't "I'm Trying to Break Your Heart" be considered their first DVD?

As noted, this is their "first-ever concert DVD." I Am Trying to Break Your Heart was a documentary on the making of Yankee Hotel, yes? Thusly, not a concert DVD. The ruling on the field stands.

I blame Nels Cline, anyway. I don't want to hear about Tweedy being responsible for any of the insufferable guitar wankery on Sky Blue Sky. If that is indeed true, all hope is truly lost.

there is concert material on the 2-disc "i am trying to break your heart" dvd, but it's considered bonus material. wonderful stuff though. and the chicago shows recorded for the "kicking television" live album were supposed to be released on dvd. i believe those shows were even filmed by sam jones, who directed the "heart" doc, but tweedy was bummed about all the logos on fans' clothing or something stupid like that. i'm glad i'll finally have a killer live wilco dvd though. that ryman show was fantastic. and nels cline does not noodle. he burns.

And just for the record, I'm definitely in the "Nels Cline shreds/burns" camp. But one time I put on Sky Blue Sky at my shitty old job, and during either "Impossible Germany" or "Side With the Seeds," a bunch of my co-workers were like "What is all this wacky noodling? We don't like it. We're buttplugs."
That job sucked.

Yay hooray! That was an incredible, incredible show.
In other, non-musical, Wilco-ish news - Jeff Tweedy's son Spencer has a school assignment called "Why I’d Like To Punch Bill O’Reilly In The Face" on his blog. Awesome.

When is Jay Bennett rejoining the group? Nothing against "Impossible Germany" but I'd like another fix of "Forget the Flowers"; their overly-tight synth-rock may have run it's course (for me at least).

I love Wilco, but there are a more than a couple of "Weather Channel music" moments on Sky Blue Sky.
