Agave Party Shut Down, Yields New Wednesday Night Dance Party

In case you missed it, there was a substantial sect of party people who spent the majority of their Tuesdays last year on a makeshift dancefloor at Agave with local DJs Principal and Coach. However, in these earliest days of 2009, the weekly event (expertly documented in the accompanying video, after the cut) abruptly had the rug it was cutting pulled right out from underneath it by--you guessed it--The Man.

Every other night of the week, Agave serves simply as a tequila bar and Mexican-style restaurant. The Man's reason behind the plug pulling is that Agave does not have a permit for dancing. A permit? For dancing? Really? Has Nashville all of a sudden become the town from Footloose? Where are Kevin Bacon and Kenny Loggins when they're needed most?

Without missing a beat, the event's organizers, Jeremy Todd and Michael Madrid (Coach and Principal, respectively), have shifted things to Wednesday nights just a couple blocks south at 12th & Porter, where I assume they plan to continue this popular hipster dance-off on a weekly basis until further notice. Which is cool and all, except now I'm left with a Tuesday-shaped void in my schedule and nothing to fill it with. Any suggestions? Drugs? Jesus? Two-for-ones at Red Door East?

from what i understand the "permit" costs approximately $300 per year. and everyone should have one, just in case. i know, it's totally ridiculous. so my suggestion i guess is that agave should just fork over the measly 300 bucks and they should keep having it on tuesdays. or you could fill tuesday with whatever you used to do on wednesday. or go bowling! is that reasonable?

12th and Porter sucks sux sukks. I was in there for the Protomen and noticed they replaced the "normal" bar with some sad rip-off of the old bar23. It looks like Roofies City in there now.

The dance permit law has been around for hundreds of years, or at least since my ex had 328 Performance Hall, which seems like a hundred years ago. As stupid as it is (along with about a gajillion other laws regarding mixing booze and fun) every bar/clubowner should know it. About ten years ago, Cafe Milano was fine $300 when my friend Wacky Jayne could no longer control herself and stood up to hip-shake to some Latin performner there. An ABC person happened to be there, and badabing, badaboom, Pino Squillace was writing a check for $300.

Todd. If you're reading. You best invest in some dancin' papers.
And actually, Wednesdays are 2-for-1 at 3 Crow. which I can't do on Tuesdays. But can do at Red Door, which isn't ever quite as good.
I also agree. There's a bad taste in my mouth reserved for 12th and Porter. Mostly ever since i had to run from the parking lot cop and sliced my knee cap open falling on a pile of broken glass in the process. don't do drugs, folks.

No worries Casio. That shit is on the wall.
Not having a dance permit at a place that serves mainly tequila is pretty stupid. What if Pee Wee Herman comes in and tries to use the phone?

Tack on $5 to the cover at 12th & Porter, use that to muster up $300 and get back to Agave. It's simple folks. Best of all, we are in January so you get to use that $300 for like 48 more weeks. That's a great deal, even for a bad dancer like myself.
Oh, and is this the same Mike Madrid that went to Belmont a couple years back? Always wondered that.

Natalie Evaro was a very charismatic young lady who worked/hung out at Agave. Late one night in October after leaving Agave, Natalie was involved in an accident on 440 and was killed. Very, very sad. Very tragic.
That being said, I'm not exactly sure what the comments are all about.

I'll explain to you what is going on. One of the greatest people I know passed away because she made a tragic decision. She drank that night, did some drugs, and then drove herself. Her family seems now to blame all of her friends and Agave for the tragic death of their daughter.
Yes, Natalie was under 21, but she drank at more than one place that night and was with her sister the majority of the night. Two she often drank wiht her family and smoked pot with them. Three just two short weeks before her accident her mom was drinking with her in a bar. So now all of us are evil people that deserve the "unmerciful retribution" because we did the same thing with Natalie that her family had done many times before. I have tried to sit back and not say anything, but I can't take it anymore. Natalie would be heartbroken right now. I understand her family has lost their daughter, but I lost someone who was like a sister to me. I would just love to remember her, but I can't. So many people keep having to be questioned and accused. I know her family wants to blame someone, but it happened to all of us. It won't bring her back and I bet if you get what you want, you will find it doesn't give you what you are looking for. Natalie was so full of life and love, never angry or sad. She just wouldn't want this, so wouldn't.

To natlie's "real" friends-
I don't think one sad friend violated those rules. The truth can be embarassing and hurtful, but they didn't lie. Bottom line is: Natalie made her own decision to drink and then drive. Agave, her family, other bars, none of them MADE her drink. She made a conscious decision to drink and drive, and the consequences are tragic. She was 4 months from being 21...does that mean that those 4 months would have changed anything about her mindframe? Probably not...she just may have been at another bar. Instead of being able to mourn our friend, we are instead having to deal with the anguish of being blamed by this family. My heart goes out to them fully, but that doesn't mean that they, or their daughter, is completely innocent in this matter.
