Monday Night vs. The Greatest of All Time

I once knew a band from Vancouver with a strange name: Trail vs. Russia. Pretty cool band, in the Shellacky, claustrophobic, bass-heavy mold, and very nice people. I just thought their band name was, you know, overly arty or something. Then I learned the story: A tiny little Canadian town (Trail) once challenged the Russian national team (Russia) to a game of hockey. And won. Instantly cool band name, even though I don't care about hockey. (Picture is only tangentially related.) Anyway, in the tradition of bands using "vs." in their names, which are also allusions to somewhat obscure historical events, Pico vs. Island Trees play 8 off 8th at Mercy Lounge tonight, along with he of the fuzzy wuzzy slippers, Kyle Andrews, joined at various points in the evening by people going by such names as Sarah Petite, Fly Golden Eagle, Massacoustics, Kelleigh Bannen, Thief & Josh Roberts and the Hinges. As always, that show is free, and starts at 9 p.m. Dubconscious are at Exit/In, too, but not versus anyone or anything, that I know of.

Dear Steve,
You should reconsider your stance on hockey. Watching the best franchise in all of sports history come back and shellack the Chicago Blackhawks(aren't you a Chicago guy?) at the second Winter Classic, was what wet dreams are made of. Is it odd to anyone else that the most accomplished franchise in all of sports is a hockey team, and for some reason southerners have a problem understanding the joy and tradition that is hockey? I will sit here with my Molson and laugh at your silly Football and Basketball dreams.

I don't have anything against hockey, it just does nothing for me.

i think hockey is cool and all, and (as a southerner), i respect the skill required to play it (i can't even skate), but why does everybody try to drive it down our throats? if people like it, then they'll watch it, and considering television ratings, alot of people don't. that being said, long live football. long live girls with tans. long live northern tourism money. long live the south.

Hey Bryan, I am a hockey fan from the South and I really enjoyed watching in person as the Wings got beat in Nashville on the 26th.
Yeah they took it to the Hawks, but Conklin had WC experience and that is HUGE in respect to the challanging conditions faced in such a game.
Finally, your beloved Chelios used to BE a Blackhawk, in the storied Eddie Belfour days, so show a little more respect. See you at Stan Mikitas, you bum!
