Bob Dylan 'Lay Lady Lay' Master Tape Sells on eBay, for a Lot

Posted by Steve Haruch on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 9:31 AM

Remember when we told you that someone was selling a master tape from Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline sessions on eBay? (We did--the tape contains five non-album takes of "Lay Lady Lay," and a jam session of "Going Back to Chicago.") The auction has ended, and looks like the reserve has, uh, been met. Before you take the jump, just take a wild guess at the winning bid.

I hope the guy that sold it will just make more copies and keep selling them.

That's just my account info that the page is pulling from.

$9999 was my guess, when you factor in the lack of intellectual property that comes with it (or doesn't for that matter). It's a cool thing for the library shelf, but once it hits the internet...

I wonder how long that will take, if it happens. If I remember right, it was only a couple weeks before that Velvet Underground acetate made it to the net.

unlike with the velvets thing, where i'm sure the band didn't care that rare mixes were out (really something only fans would care about), the multitrack thing offers some serious infringement on the dylan camp so i'm sure that the owner of the multritrack (if he/she is smart), will keep it mostly to themselves or their inner circle.. or they're looking at a lot more than $30,000 out of their pocket for the ownership of that tape.

I was off by half!

I was off by $70K -- I figured it would sell for hunnert grand to some smitten, well-heeled boomer. Like my neighbor, whose house is crammed with vintage, signed Stones memorabilia -- he even went to a London auction of same.
