Cage Against the Machine (an English Dive)

Posted by Steve Haruch on Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 10:35 AM

So here's a video of Cage the Elephant and AutoVaughn playing Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name Of," at a sold-out and very sweaty-looking show in Middleborough, England. (Remember when AutoVaughn asked their fans for the dough to get over the pond? Looks like that paid off for them, big time.) Anyway, at the end of this here video, you'll see Matt from CTE take a dive from a balcony and into the crowd--without a shirt!

How do I like them apples? Not at all. I'm trying to imagine the conversation that led to this.
"Dude, out of all the songs in the world to cover, both of our bands should cover this terrible song by this terrible band."
"Dude, that's the greatest idea I've ever heard."

nice ryan...nice. you've obviously played way too many shows like these before. you got to be soooo jaded from just another trivial night of so called rock n roll?? please...don't bore this guy people.
and "awful", who's the whatever length haired, indie hater kid that only plays in murfreesboro and nashville (if that) in your band??

hey ryan and awful. you really tricked us into thinking you're not the same person. you waited a whole 23 and a half min to post again. gee-whizz you're smart! so smart you only listen to bands that are so cool that all they need to do is stand around on stage with a super awsome hairdoo and pointy boots. man, critics really know good music these days! how about this, you go deep throat all the cool bands you know and stay the f*** away from the real people. we obviously don't like you!

I have no problem with either of these bands, I just don't enjoy the styles of music they play.
I just wonder why, out of all the awesome songs that a band could consider to cover, they would pick this one. The answer is good taste. You either have it or you don't.

it's obvious that the 800+ sweaty concertgoers in this video not only love this song but also are really excited (and showing it). i didn't see one person that wasn't jumping around or having a great time. there really is no argument here. anybody that tries to make fun of these 2 bands CLEARLY is incredibly pathetic and jealous. ryan might be the most pathetic and i would LOVE to know what band he's in that doesn't tour and doesn't draw well at their own local shows. i bet i could guess...

If you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all. haha is right, people love it. CTE just came off a sold out tour in the UK so there are plenty thousands of people who enjoy it. both of these bands have worked their asses off for quite some time. why hate on them even if you don't like the tunes? all i know is New Year's eve is going to be awesome. I will pay the 20 bucks for that.

Haha,
I play in the Carter Administration. We don't cover Rage Against the Machine, even for the 4 people that come to our shows.

Posted by ryan on December 11, 2008 at 1:36 PM

that's cool that you don't cover Rage, but what's wrong with it? the song is an classic amped-up, angst-ridden anthem that is fun to play and gets the crowd rowdy. this crowd looks like they wanted to get rowdy so what's wrong with giving the people what they want?
back to my other point... i must admit that Carter Admin was not my guess, but i've been to one of your shows before and there were at least 20 people there. don't sell yourself short. you definitely earned that $50 that you split 3 ways.

i like how ethan slips in for some quick promo. good job ethan. that's why you are awesome at what you do.
Hey Ryan, you make reference to good taste and those bands not having it. Didn't you just say only 4 people come to your shows? How many sold out shows have you played overseas? How many times have you packed the Mercy Lounge or 12th & Porter or the Exit/in? Perhaps you should consider playing cover songs. maybe people will then actually come to your gigs.

Wow, guys, I don't know how to respond. You've made very good points.
I'm going to go back to the guys and we're going to start learning some covers, and we'll pack those places out and then our band will mean something. Maybe we'll even beg for money to go on tour! Thanks for the inspiration, I appreciate your knowledge. Do I owe you guys anything?

I will also take your 100% of your life and dignity. I am glad we can work together on this Ryan. I see a bright future ahead. My attorney will be in touch.

Posted by Bawston Sean on December 11, 2008 at 6:07 PM

Rage rocks. their oceans of fans at every show they've done since the mid 90s tends to prove that. why not cover that song or that experience? Don't see anything wrong with it. what would be your superior and more "tasteful" cover of choice Ryan?
taste is merely opinionated. Ryan is entitled to his opinion. though for some reason it still seems like he's a jealous little bitch.
Yes Ryan, i just called you a bitch. your move.

report
Posted by Chode the Wet Sprocket on December 12, 2008 at 3:56 PM

Yes, Mr. Wet Sprocket, "oceans of fans" prove that "Rage rocks." I guess "oceans of fans" also prove that Huey Lewis & the News, Rascall Flatts, Warrant, Bush, Styx, Pet Shop Boys, Barry Manilow, and Linkin Park all rock. That's cool if that's how you define rather or not a musician rocks, I feel sorry for your record collection.
Is it RATM that I am apparently jealous of? Not sure, but I can say with all honesty that on the list of folks I am jealous of, Rage is, uh, pretty far down there.
Also, good taste is subjective. It is not, as you say, opinionated.

I really wasn't suggesting that fans of cage, rage, or autovaughn WOULD come see you. Just making the connection after you wrote
"I just wonder why, out of all the awesome songs that a band could consider to cover, they would pick this one. The answer is good taste. You either have it or you don't."
This implies that you DO have "good taste", does it not? So after listening to the music that you create and therefore find it in good taste it all made sense. YOUR BAND SUCKS BRO! Stop hating on bands that actually play shows to crowds just because you're bitter.

Subjective:
Subjectivity refers to a subject's perspective, particularly feelings, beliefs, and desires. It is often used casually to refer to unjustified personal OPINIONS, in contrast to knowledge and justified belief.
Ryan, did someone remove your brain and take a giant shit inside your skull to replace it???
good to know all we inferior peasants of "bad taste" will now have you to turn to for future guidance...so please, lead us wise one. lead us. our record collections can't bear another day.
and perhaps since Autovaughn "begged for money" maybe your band could beg for hair transplants??? worked for them. think about it ryan...if that port-a-pot you call a brain actually achieves that function.

Bros, you might want to consider skipping the testosterone supplements for a couple of days.
I'm so hurt you guys don't like my band! Coming from a couple of brilliant minds such as yourselves, it really cuts deep. We were thinking about writing some more shitty songs and playing a few shows to nobody, but we'll probably go ahead and shut it down now.
Of course I have good taste. And my record collection is bad ass. Yours on the other hand, I'm getting a pretty good feeling what it's all about, meaning it's all about shirtless dude mullet rock. But, you know, that's probably okay with you.

report
Posted by ryan on December 13, 2008 at 5:31 PM

You could just switch one word and have "balding dude mullet rock" and we're back to your band. Of course the word rock doesn't really fit so we might want to find a replacement for that one too? Go ahead and keep thinking you're a tastemaker, have a great collection of albums, and are in a good band. It's obviously working for ya. Supplements? Yeah, propecia would probably work best. Or, you could just shave it man? No shame in that. Its worked for Howie Mandel for a long time.

report
Posted by Or... on December 14, 2008 at 11:55 AM

Actually, Propecia is shown to seriously fuck your shit up.
I am not bald, nor am I balding, but if I was, I would probably shave my head, or wear a hat all the time, because I would be a little self conscious about it. The dude in my band who is bald has been that way for a while, and he seriously doesn't give a fuck about it anymore. So, unfortunately, your suggestions are in vain.
Yes, my record collection and my band are both working for me, I enjoy them, thanks.
I appreciate your anonymity!
