Well, you made it through another week. How are you going to cut loose, now that late start times are no excuse for staying home?
On Friday, one question you could ask yourself is, "Am I feeling at all '90s-core?" If the answer is yes, you've got two promising options.
Option 1: Forget Cassettes will be playing the loud-quiet-loud stuff with Sincerity Guild & Nite Nite at The End. If you're also feeling a little angst-y, post-rock-y, or eyeliner-y.
Option 2: Rage Against the Machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers cover bands at Exit/In. If you're also feeling a little sex magicky and Che Guevara-y, not to mention shirtless-ponytail-high-toppy and slightly douche-y.
Saturday, the choice basically comes down to "rock" versus "urban." You know those words are coded, right?
Option 1: Check out the urban stylings of city dwellers American Bang at The Basement, as they move you to the music that they are playing on their guitars and other urban instruments. (With The Tits and Modoc, 9 p.m.)
Option 2: Conversely, get a load of MC 24/7 (ex-Spooky Johnson) as he rocks steady on the microphone at Cafe Coco. Sucker MCs can call him "sire."
Too bad Keith Urban's not playing, because that would be the trifecta.
Showing 1-16 of 16
also Friday Dec 5 tonight...Wess Floyd & the Daisycutters, Glossary and Caitlin Rose @ 12th and Porter
and yet another...tonight, Friday Dec. 5th at the Springwater:
the Healthy Home (3 piece featuring members of Hollow Ox and Bad Friend),
Motion Decay,
and Black Static
there's also a show at Betty's (49th and Charlotte) tonight but I'm not exactly sure what the lineup is. i do know they have extremely cheap beer and colorful people.
also tonight: parachute musical/kindercastle winter of dreamz at mercy lounge... bring mistletoe... maybe you'll get lucky.
I'm so upset they blacked-out the windows at Exit-In. I would have loved to cross the street check out a little bit of option 2 between sets from option 1 tonight. Oh well...
We used to play at Betty's all the time. Beware the feral cat herd outside, but the regulars are some really nice people.
Cat herd indeed. I drove up one night and interrupted some hot lovin' between two of them and got this look like "Who the fuck are YOU?!" I bought em a beer later as an olive branch.
It was awkward.
It would be awesome if you were using "cat herd" euphemistically.
I'd have to change the location to the roof of the Springwater to really take advantage of that.
(Vomiting sound)
DJ Burgers dance party after the Parachute Musical show at Mercy. I hear he's the shit...
WINTER OF DREAMZ @ Mercy Lounge this weekend

Friday: KinderCastle's CD release party featuring Parachute Musical & KinderCastle w/ Noises 10
Saturday: Space Capone & Kyle Andrews w/ Elle Macho
I pretty much despise this bitching post known as the Nashville Cream, but when checking if my show tonight is getting any press (of course it is not) I saw everyone else mentioning the hot shows of the evening. So, I thought I'd put my first comment up and talk about what I am doing tonight.
I am putting on my first experiment of how I want to book my band Gunslinger in the future. An experimental hip hop group that I've begun drumming for, This Is Art, and Gunslinger will set the stage together tonight at The 5 Spot and go seamlessly in and out of sets for 2-3 hours. Gunslinger will have 2 different bass players through the course of the night and other guests coming on and off. I hope in the future to have 3 band bills be one massive set comprised of multiple genres and directions of music (we are actually doing this on a 17 day tour in February)
I'm just trying to do something different with my music. I'm not trying to play the hype game. I'm trying to supply a huge artistic experience for the listener. For those who have seen Gunslinger in the past and thought "these guys are just jamming and I dont know what the fuck is going on" I understand where you are coming from, but those were our pre-pubescent days. We are coming out of that stage and are really starting to understand our sound. We need your help though for our further growth. We need your trust and support. If you want something different from your music, come on out tonight to the 5 Spot.
love,
Miles
I pretty much despise this bitching post known as the Nashville Cream
But I'll use it to bitch about my band not getting coverage on the bitching post that I pretty much despise!
Welcome to puberty, Miles!

Miles/Gunslinger--i've seen your band and heard your myspace tunes. so, what sets you apart from all the other experimental guitar/drums duets that have existed in the world?? What i've heard from you guys sounds like a real obsession with santana or something. latin grooves on the drums and pentatonic/dorian mode guitar noodling. this is cool, but i've not been blown away by it. i've also heard the pseudo-ethnic rambling, as well. not bad, but certainly not groundbreaking.
The reason I say all of this is that I admire the intent of your music, what you guys are going for, but add some variety. Tell your guitar player to break out of the pentatonic box, so to speak. And don't speak of your band as doing something completely new and different with your music. Leave that to the critics and the fans.
also, check out some of the groups that were and have been doing the same kind of thing FOR YEARS:
rudolph grey and beaver harris in the blue humans; keiji haino and rashied ali; nels cline and gregg bendian; recent records from bill frisell and jack dejohnette, and many, many others...you may have heard some or all of these, and if you have, you'd know that the sky's the limit with how you can approach the guitar/drums as a duet.
You hate Nashville Cream yet you ask for everyone's trust and support? This isn't a fucking episode of Dr. Phil, play your music and shut the fuck up about what 'stage' your band is in and if people like it, they'll come see you. Why not post some of the dates of your upcoming huge tour?
thanks to "being constructive" I enjoyed your feedback. You seem like you have a good perspective of music. We are actually no longer a duet, though. At the show on Friday we actually had a revolving door of 8 people over the course of 2.5 hours. I mention this because I must explain our constant growth. I understand how you could have been turned off by us in the past, but as our community grows we are able to get closer to what we hear in our heads. I haven't done any "pseudo-ethnic rambling" in over a year and a half and at that point we had only been a band for a half of a year. A lot of shits happened since then. I would love to offer you free entry to our next show. You sound like you have an interesting understanding of music.
As for me speaking about how we are doing something new with our music, I understand that there are many people doing very great and interesting groundbreaking things. I am just saying that we are heading down that path. The path has been explored very intensely since around the time the Beatles started down it, but what I find very interesting about it is that mindset is one of the most important parts. With a scene with a lot of bands doing things very formulaic, I am just expressing the fact that we are trying to do things with an open mind and open ended expression. If you enjoy that mindset in music, that is what we have to offer.
I am very excited that you admire our intent. That is the most I can hope for from people right now. That is why I ask for support and understanding. I am going to continue touring constantly and work on refining our craft and take your advice and let the critics do the talking.
