The Raconteurs' Little Jack Lawrence Is Not Suing His Ex for Rent, No Matter What the New York Post Says [Updated]

Posted by Steve Haruch on Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 10:13 PM

The other day, the New York Post ran this item ("Raconteurs Bassist Jack Lawrence Wants Rent From Ex"). It contains these words:

The bass player for hipster band the Raconteurs is a cheap layabout who is suing his ex-girlfriend for $10,000 in back rent. "Little" Jack Lawrence dated a woman known only as Kelly for a decade, friends of the ex-girlfriend say. "During that time she totally supported him and paid for everything," the pal added. "But the second he hit it big with the Raconteurs, he broke up with her and then tried to kick her out of the home she'd lived in for 10 years. He's despicable."

The story has since spread around the Internet, not surprisingly. Being naturally curious folk ourselves, we at the Cream thought we might take a look at such a lawsuit, which the Post article claims was filed in Nashville.

Too bad there's no lawsuit. According to The Raconteurs camp, there is no lawsuit.

An email from a publicist for The Raconteurs tells the Cream just that, and in no uncertain terms: "The New York Post 'Page Six' item is entirely fabricated and untrue. The band do not have a comment, as it's such unmitigated garbage it's not worth their time. However, you may quote me if you like."

So there you have it. Little Jack Lawrence did not go the Duke Spirit show the other night while his lawyers were vampiring it up on some legal pads and racking up the billable hours.

Update: We are looking into this matter further.

Update II: According to a clerk at the Davidson County court, a lawsuit is pending against Ms. Craig, with Jack Lawrence as the plaintiff. It was filed in November and the docket number is 08GT10615. The case is continued indefinitely, with no court date set.

hi...this is kelli craig, the ex-girlfriend of "little" jack lawrence. yes, he DID sue me for my house (which is a matter of public record), all of its contents, and $10K. and, yes, i supported him for 8 years prior to his so-called fame with the raconteurs. yesterday, i WON the house, (that was rightfully mine) in court. so if anyone has anything to say contrary, they can take it up with me....hahaha...and my attorneys.
Editor's Note: Kelli Craig called the Scene and says that she did not post this comment. "I know who it was, and they were just trying to stick up for me," she says.

I am a personal friend of Kelli Craig's and aside from the fact that she is one of the funniest, smartest, sweetest, and all around most entertaining people in Nashville, I also know for a fact that this information is COMPLETELY false and there is a VERY, VERY real lawsuit going on between her and the said Jack Lawrence of "The Raconteurs fame.
Get your facts straight before posting things online.
Jack sued Kelli and Now she has no other option but to defend herself. 2+2=4

Why don't you stop fellating the "rock star" and look for the truth. The only thing untrue in the Post was that they lived in the house for ten years, which is false, because they are from Cincinnati and moved to Nashville a couple of years ago.
Kelli put her life and dreams on hold to support Jack and help him achieve his dream. Wanting to break up with someone is one thing, doing it by betraying them with another person and then trying to ruin them financially and put them out on the street, is another. I am not a part of their relationship and I know that there are two sides, but what he did was mean, cruel, dishonest and wrong.
It isn't easy, because he is my friend, too (I know him in real life, before he was a rock star and was just an awkward dork) and I hate to choose sides.... But he made it kind of easy.
So knock it off with your "hero worship". The guy acted like a snake, no matter how you try to spin it in your blog.

Probably nobody involved wanted this stuff dredged up on the Cream for everybody to look at. This blog is good times even at its meanest, but this is kind of some hard, serious, personal, private stuff.

Hardly a rock star. More like a Jack White hanger-on.

Here's where I am confused. Why did LJ or whatever his name is not release his own statement? Why did the "statement" come from the Raconteurs camp? What do they have to do with it other than pay for LJ's lawyers fees to sue his ex? I think it would've been a bit more honorable to get the bull straight from the horses mouth, vs. a faulty statement from the camp that is meddling in personal affairs unneccessarily... but I guess honor on his behalf at this point is too much to ask for.

there are two sides to every story, and we've heard the girl's side ad nauseum. i'd really like to hear little jack's version of events. since he's being pilloried and all.

I am very glad to hear that Kelli won the house; she deserves it.

It's always nice to see someone air dirty laundry, so classy. You realize that most people don't even care about this right? Think this will help your business at the Crusty Cage?

I've met kelli before and LJ for that matter. He seems easy going guy and very shy and she seems to be a heavy duty drama queen and this was my opinion before this happened. I know some folks in the Greenhornes camp and all the Greenhornes can't stand her. From what I hear they always thought she would do something like this. I can't speak for the other Rac's but I would imagine they all stand behind him. Kelli didn't win the house she can stay in the house while LJ has to to take her to another court to get her out. She is a squatter for now. Apparently they have broke up several times before, funny that she never did this before he made some money? Speaking of which I heard he gave her a nice check when they broke up too. So if you have worked your butt off touring for 15 years, then finally are able to buy a house, if your girl or boy is already into drama then chances are you'll be going to court too. Its unfair that Kelli is airing this dirty laundry.

hopefully people realize this is terrible post. The reason Nashville is cool place for creative people, some whom are fairly successful, is that this kind of shit doesn't usually come up on some stupid blog. This is out of character and in bad taste for Nashville.

no, susan, your boyfriend's band can't open for the raconteurs on their next nashville show. don't bother emailing. that opening slot is permanently reserved for whatever project chris slack is "working" on at that time.

This is none of our business. It has nothing to do with his music career, talents, or whatever. It's their own personal bullshit. Shut Up.
