Does Obama Like Bluegrass?

Posted by Steve Haruch on Wed, Nov 5, 2008 at 8:56 AM

Ricky Skaggs raised some McCain yesterday, but not enough to get his guy elected:

Skaggs was hoping a McCain victory would keep him welcome at the White House: he not only has performed for President Bush, but also his father when he was president.

"I'm not sure that Mr. Obama likes bluegrass or country music that well," he said with a chuckle.

Without trying to read too much into that comment, I'll just ask this: Anybody else feel kinda awesome this morning?

Was that not the quickest election from start to finish that you've ever seen? Even when Clinton was re-elected I don't remember the winner being announced and the concession being made so quickly. Truly amazing and historic.

It's killing me that NC hasn't reported yet. Of all the states, MINE has to be delinquent this time.

It's rare that the person I voted for wins. This is weird. Are we sure all the McCain votes got counted?

A black man asks America for change. No shocker there.

I think McCain couldn't wait to get that concession speech out there because it was the best speech he's made the whole campaign, probably because he actually got to say something he meant instead of something some Republican machine speechwriter told him to say. Two good guys, IMO, and it's been a while since a political speech got me going like Obama's. Again, it's nice to have a statesman up there.

I swore off discussing politics on this board, however I would like to briefly concur with Larry's thoughts on John McCain. While there was zero chance I would ever vote for him, I do view Senator McCain as a far greater statesman, gentleman, and public servant than George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and any number of other hate-spewing conservatives could ever hope to be. His partnership with the smug Sarah Palin notwithstanding, John McCain's commendable ethical standards and willingness to engage in bipartisan reform are qualities that have become all too rare in the Republican Party. If someone absolutely forced me to chose a Republican for president, it would be John McCain. Or maybe Arnold ;-)

Not to sound too much like Michelle Obama, but this is the MOST proud of my country that I have ever been in my life. My beloved Tennessee, however, remains a giant reddish-black hole of stagnation.

And I still almost can't believe it. I feel so un-jaded allofasudden, I don't know what the fuck to do with myself. Oh, I know Obama isn't perfect, and the ol' U.S. of A. isn't going to turn into some sort of fantasy-land all of a sudden, but damn. Damn. What an awesome thing that happened while we were all alive.

We just have to remember that even if Obama plays his hand perfectly, it may take a few years or even a full term to see the widespread effects of the changeover, domestically and abroad. We can't rush to judge him in his first year or anything, because he has a large hole to dig us out of. The reaction of the international community was ecouraging, however.

While I am stoked about Obama winning and what in means for our country, after reading most of the posts on the nashville craigslist under 'politics' I kinda wanna throw up.

I agree. It would have been nice if President Bush could have also been afforded the same courtesy.

That doesn't even make sense. His approval rating was through the roof back then! His administration had plenty of time to earn their low marks and they did by invading the wrong country, ruining the economy, pushing the evangelical agenda, and being horrible at diplomacy. This all happened well after his first year. Mission accomplished indeed.

Bush and his band of cynical thieves did themselves and their party in. They have nobody but themselves to blame - not they give a rat's ass. Hell, Bush is lucky to get off without being impeached. Really, it is a crime he hasn't.

Think of what a few assholes on craigslist are compared to the millions of us who voted for Obama. That's right: nothing.
