We had some technical difficulties, but the slideshow from the Lil Wayne show is up now. Look for a complete reckoning in this week's dead tree edition of The Spin, which includes this observation: "[T]he thousands of undergrads in attendance—mostly female, mostly white, mostly JV—were nearly apoplectic with glee at the mere sight of Weezy dancing across the stage, making the place sound more like a Backstreet Boys concert circa 1997 than a rap show."

The Spin wants to know: How many of these young women will be at Girl Talk?

Wait. Girl Talk are coming?
Just my luck, sold out. Wish I'd known about it sooner. Anyone know where I can score a ticket?

I wish there was something to let me know about shows in advance. You know, like a publication of sorts. Or maybe a blog.

Ok, here it comes - its been too long anyway...
I do not get Girl Talk.
A. The shit he's doing is so elementary that anyone with a decent DAW and a beatmatching plug-in can do it, ergo...
B. You would think that the artist who is currently best known for it would be doing something a little more original than stringing together a bunch of rap accapellas with trite, boring, and completely predictable 4/4 patterns based on tired hits that we've already heard a hundred times.
C. Or maybe that's exactly what the early 20's college crowd (young, dumb and full of you know...) wants to hear and I'm being unreasonable, but I still say the shit's weak.
You want to hear a good mashup? Check out Jazzanova. This GT stuff is just a dumbed down DJ set as far as my snooty snooty self-rightous opinion is concerned.

burrito, i think you're reading far too into it.
it's just fun music. yeah, anybody can do it. but nobody WAS doing it and that's where he comes in. i don't want to rehash our arguments over technical skill versus the power of simplicity or anything. but, i don't think people give a shit if what he's doing is hard.
don't get me wrong, i still can't quite wrap my head around the fact that a sold out crowd of people are packing into Cannery to watch a guy play mp3's on his laptop. surely, either you and i could play in his stead and put on just as good a show.
but we're not and he is. that's just how it goes.
oh, and Tobin. not only did Steve post about the Girl Talk show back in June, you were the first to comment on it.

I don't like GT either, but I can't find a good reason to get worked up about it.

oh, btw. anonymous is me. forgot to fill out my namey name.
also, The Avalanches were doing much better, more intricate, and way more impressive mash ups before people were even calling them mash ups.

Laptops shows: Couldn't agree with you more, and I've done a few myself. But I never promote them because like you said, wheres the entertainment value?
Fun Music for its own sake: You may have a point.
Mashups: I really think its a great art form. Just not when tailored to the college crowd.

June is TOO far in advance. I can't remember the names of all my co-workers, how am I supposed to remember shows that are months and months away? A friendly reminder would have been nice.
I've listed to quite a bit more GT in the interim. My appreciation has grown. I typically avoid 'fun' bands like the plague, but GT has gotten his claws into me.
But I digress. Ticket? Anyone? Can a ML/C rep help me out here?

The Avalanches were awesome!! I forgot all about them.
Punk rock was pretty rad and stuff, and people always said that anyone could have done that crap. Those arguments never seem to gain any traction.

i definitely agree with you, Sullivan.
whether you're talking about Nirvana, The Ramones, Buddy Holly, Throbbing Gristle, The Sonics, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, or John Cage. the point isn't that nobody else could do it. it's that no one else did.
anyone could have sat at piano for 2 minutes and 15 seconds without playing a note. he was just the first to find a reason to.

I LOVED that "Since I Left You" record by Avalanches! Supposedly the new one is getting wrapped up and they claim it will be "so fukin' party you will die". As for Girl Talk, I have no opinion. I do, however, have an opinion about Vandy kids who never leave campus or the immediate West end area. I went to college in Tallahassee. The vicinity was 10 times more redneck and scarier than Nashville and we still rocked sink holes, sand dunes, and road house karaoke. Of course, we usually had to drive to Athens to see cool bands.

Tobin:
I announced Girl Talk on June 30th. Tickets went on sale on July 4. It's been in our ad in the SCENE every week since then. I sent out bulletins every day as the tickets went from 200 left to 100 left to 20 left. It sold out over a month ago.
For everyone like Tobin who is unhappy when they can't get tickets to a sold out show here, go to mercylounge.com and sign up for our email list. When a show is about to sell out, we always email that list first.
We MAY release a VERY SMALL number of tickets, like 10 maybe, next week. Those will only be announced to our email list.
Tobin, I will personally sell you a ticket to the show that is not part of those ten. In order to get that ticket, I will need you personally to come by the office. That way, John, Todd, Chark & I can meet you, and you can let us know how we can do a better job of bringing bands to Nashville and operating a music venue, since we obviously do such a poor job.
Seriously, I will sell you a ticket at the office if you want to come by. My number's on the website.

Out of curiosity, I thought the Cannery totally sucks. Why does everyone want to see a show there so bad when the sound is so unbearable? I guess maybe the Ballroom isn't so bad. After all, it's no City Hall.

Burrito, the "you're not the douche who stole it comment" was a bit tongue-in-cheek, though the snake wine does remain a sore spot around the office. By the way, we could have been neighbors a while back: I live in the moon documentary guy's place at Big Red. Were you on the penthouse level, too? Oh yeah, regardless of your directives, I will NEVER lay off the sauce.

Nah I lived downstairs in 206, but we hung out at Danny's place alot and my buddies had one of the upper units for a while. Chark lived directly overhead so sometimes instead of sleeping I'd just go join in whatever fun he had going on. I wonder if my gas grill is still up there on the patio by the tracks. If it is, its yours.
Damn, I'm sorry somebody made off with that thing. Don't blame you for being sore. It was cool as hell.

my bad Dengar. i forgot that you had to be an artistic visionary to throw a good party.

is there an ironic word filter on your computer i'm unaware of?

justin, you said this:
"and regardless of what people may say about his talent or lack thereof, the show is sold out. that speaks louder than any rant on a blog imo."
so what does it speak louder about? i was just saying you can be complete asshole and sell a lot of tickets. is all.
yes, i have a low pass ironic word filter on my computer. you should get one. true analog bypass.
pls pls tell me now is there something i shld know....

"so what does it speak louder about?"
1 or 2 snide remarks on a blog regarding his "skill" does not equate to the 1000 or so tickets sold to see this guy.
and lets be honest, i by no means am a fan but i have to hand it to the guy. he's breaking out of party culture and into a mainstream fan base all based on the hype of his parties. same goes for guys like aoki.
they may be nothing more than hype men, but they're introducing a style of music (tho tamed) to a larger group of people who by other means would never enjoy it.
in the end it's a larger fan base for everyone involved.
people need an entry point and girl talk is just that. sure, your average fan isn't going to go to girl talk and turn around and buy the next kitsune' comp. but with the way things are going, it seems much more plausible today than it did even last year.
