Check out a tow-headed Bobby Bare Jr. singing a Shel Silverstein ditty with dear old dad. Granted, he's but a wee chap for this performance, but we have to be objective about our scoring.

I was in Bare Jr from 1997-1999 and I know how
the record deal with Immortal went down. Happy Walters,
president of Immortal Records heard the 'You Blew Me Off' demo,
loved it and had no idea who Bobby Bare or Bobby Bare
Jr was. This was the label with Korn as their most successful
artist, why the fuck would they care who Bobby's father was?
They just loved the song, thought it could be a hit and signed
Bobby who named the band Bare Jr which further distanced
his name from his father.
He has since worked with his father and most peeps enjoy
their collab. Next time identify yourself, Oscar the little girl.

Say what you want about Jr... he has lots of great songs and knows his Music City history backward and forward. Some people love him... some people don't... still doesn't change the fact that his music career has been through his own efforts. I had the same assumptions years ago. This city has more than its share of coattail riding stories so it's certainly easy to be suspicious of any 2nd or 3rd generations.

I'm always astounded by the amount of negative passion on this blog (or anywhere I guess) generated by music/art/scenes or whatever. I mean, I don't deny it. It's real for sure (aside from times when people are just obviously trying to rile things up), but it's hard to pinpoint why. I mean, politics affect us tangibly, so I can understand anger and verbal assault and even slander from either side when you feel like your defending your actual way of life and livelihood, but nobody really forces music or art or a particular social scene on us, and since there is so much diversity out there (in other words, there's so much stuff that you're bound to hate something other people love and vice versa and you know...that's ok), there's no real shortage of the pie. Nobody's getting their piece taken away. So while I can totally understand not being able to tolerate a single note of Bobby Bare, JR or JEFF or American Bang or the Beatles or Johnny Cash or Charlie Pride or Kanye West or Phish or whoever, and while I can understand not wanting to hang with ALL of the different types of people who might dig that stuff...I don't understand the sincere anger and malice generated by those artists doing what they do, and those people digging what they dig. I'm still a little drunk, I think, but it is fascinating. This is long. Sorry about that.

i think definitely when you jump on that stage, you have to understand that part of the deal is getting hated on (i do), and i don't think you can take it all personally, and i think you're lucky if you get a percentage of people who might dig it and you have to know a bigger percentage will just think your art is completely brutal garbage. totally true. i just don't understand that real, deep-seeed vitriol and hate and angst. i guess that's all i was saying.

I've played the Basement a lot and the Slow Bar when it was Mike's. No one has been ripped off at either place (unless they got a blow job from your mother). He gives the band the door after a production cost. Most places do this. It is reasonable since the bands don't have to bring a PA. If there are rooms that don't charge production then that is just fine too. We call it the price of doing business. Like your mother getting facial gonorrhea. Mike is the one of the most honest people I know. I have known him for 8 years and have done business with him for 7. Money has never been an issue.

He is one of the most honest guys I know (8 years). High prices? You open a business that has to compete with Best Buy and Wal-mart and see what you are forced to do. I do all of my CD buying at Grimey's and am always happy. I wish prices were lower but I don't blame the guys that runs my Exxon for high fuel prices.

Geez, Nashville is full of haters. I guess that's what happens when you get a bunch of aspiring musicians all together in one town. The wannabees hate on all the folks working hard to make Nashville's music scene that much hipper.

I know this is an "old"(or maybe tired) thread, but I just wanted to add/clarify that Mike Grimes and everyone else that works at Grimeys is not getting rich off of cd sales, I assure you. Best Buy, Target, Walmart, etc., these stores sell music as a loss leader(that means that they don't intend on making a profit) to get you to the store to buy other things that they offer. So big retail stores receive huge discounts on cds, and then sell for cost or less just to coax consumers.(and what good consumers we are!) That is why new major label cd's are more expensive at ANY small independent retailer.
As far as vinyl goes, it costs a LOT more to manufacture and that expense is passed to the retailer. Grimeys survives from it's used product. Consider that next time you steel it, all you theives out there.
