Another Way to Piss off Jack White

Posted by Tracy Moore on Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 6:03 AM

We told you the news that local luminary Jack White is penning the new James Bond Theme for Quantum of Solace with Alicia Keys. But when an instrumental portion of the song, titled "Another Way to Die," showed up in a Bond-themed Coke Zero add, White wasn't happy about it. From an article:

Jack White was commissioned by Sony Pictures to write a theme song for the James Bond film 'Quantum of Solace', not for Coca Cola," Jack's spokesperson recently says.

That sucks and all. But man does the tune have all manner of bad-assery, particularly when it kicks into the White-stamped proggy guitar part that's just got swagger all over it. Check it:

had homeboy been paying attention to just about every blockbuster film made in the past 20 years or so, he may have noticed there's almost always a product tie in, going all the way back to E.T. and Reese's Pieces. he may even end up with his face on a taco bell cup.
i understand his displeasure and all, but when you do business with a conglomerate like sony, you're also dealing with all their mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and partnerships.

Hahahaha! Poor pitiful Jack White. Having his artistic integrity shattered by a beverage conglomerate.
Newsflash Einstein: Bond movies (and most major motion pictures) are used to hype all manner of products. You couldn't agree to participate and not expect this. Shit, they'll be playing it at Burger King a week or two. Boo-hoo! Hopefully you at least got a real drummer for this tune...

I think this goes a bit further back than just the Bond film. I mean, White has been sporting red, white and black for a decade now, waiting for the proper time to look like an inadvertent shill. The man's got a plan, and soon he'll start using Coke bottles as guitar slides and aluminum pull-tabs as picks.

Would I like to make as much money off a few chords as Mr. White? Absolutely!
Do I grudge him the economic gap between us? Absolutely not. I am successful in my own less glamorous industry and comfortable enough to get a good laugh at his concern over vanishing street-cred. But not jealous. The guy can't walk into MAPCO without getting bothered. I don't envy that.

Career Goal #64:
Get bothered every time I walk into a Mapco.
Career Goal #65:
Short-lived relationship with Megan Fox and/or that girl from Veronica Mars that is only contrived by our 'people' to keep us in the tabloids, but we still have sex.

Jack White couldn't give a shit less if his Bond song is used in a Coke ad. That is NOT why he is angry. He's angry because he expected the song to be used for promotional purposes after the song was released or after the movie came out. He did not want people to hear an incomplete version of the song before it was to be released. He is also upset because it was being reported that he wrote that tune specifically for the Coke ad and that wasn't true.
