Now, in it's third year the event has become a full-on music conference and festival scattered across clubs in the city. It's a SXSW or CMJ-styled event in the heart of the Southeast, showcasing some of the best singer-songwriter and rock talent that the city, as well as the region has to offer. And let's be honest, SXSW is totally saturated. There's not much else left to do there that isn't already being done. And who needs another destination/camping festival? The Next Big Nashville organizers - with all club shows and a stellar lineup of conference panels - are onto something here....And of course, if you just can't believe the party's over, there's always Next Big Hangover tonight at Mercy Lounge, with And the Relatives, Stories That Live, Eastern Block, Codaphonic, The Whip, This Modern Station, Repent or Forever Be Damned & My Tyger (hosted by Indie Ghetto, Out The Other & We Own This Town).

That blog was weak. Especially this: "10:30 PM - Instrumental blues-jammers Skyblazers are a total bore, so I head backstage to say hello to the venue's next act, Dead Confederate." In other words, dude is friends with Dead Confederate and went to hangout. Okay, so fucking what. I happen to think that the Skyblazer was quite entertaining. They were more interesting to me than Dead Confederate. Paste should stick to blogging about shows they actually attended if they want credibility as a source for music reviews.
I'm not a Jeff fan, so I wasn't expecting much from Skyblazer, but they blew me away. I don't see how anyone could think they were boring.
Gotta say, Jason and Ethan did one hell of a job this year! Also, Drew kidnapped Lord T and Eloise for the Mercy afterparty on Friday night, which was (for want of a better word) BADASS!
JEFF was pretty damn awesome Friday night.
i thought the weekend was a great success.
even though it is always frustrating to not have the power of being 2 or 3 places at once.
i put some pics up.
more to come.
and later, more from the huge pillow fight!
that's funny i thought skyblazer were boring, too. and jeff was subpar -- not their best show (i have loved them live before). meemaw were fantastic.
no reason to think there's only one viewpoint; lots of different elements entering the fun factor equation this weekend. for instance the features kind of bored me but then again i was really tired. and the magic wands blew me away.
Hello Palmer Houchins at Paste Magazine,
I'll try to be nice about this.
Skyblazer is not in any way shape or form "Instrumental blues-jammers". What you're admitting by saying that is you stuck around for the intro (instrumental) to the first song, then went backstage to see your friends.
You know, Nirvana-from-the-south-that-you've-seen-half-a-dozen-times.
I'm sure you are a heck of a nice person. And your friends are lucky that you write for Paste.
But next time I hope they send a journalist who will actually watch a bands set before slagging it.
Do good work,
Sara K.
Does anyone know where gumby came from? so random..
The Magic Wands were by far the absolute worst thing I've ever seen. If you're going to half ass something at least get someone to create some decent beats. It sounded like they just ripped the beat from the fresh prince of belair and looped it for every song. I'd venture to say that the rest of Cannery felt the same way seeing as they cleared the hell outta that place once magic wands started playing. Am I right? Huh?
