Next Big Heads-Up

If you're one of those schmoozy A&R-core, fashionably-late types, you might want to put a bigger emphasis on punctuality when attending Next Big Nashville this year. Based on attendance at the screening of Make Out With Violence last night (two capacity shows) versus Movie Night '07 (forty scenesters and a masturbating waitress), I'm going to make the call and say that shows are going to be packed out all weekend. Get there early and claim your spot—if you think a shows is going to be rad, odds are that a lot of other people feel the same way. There was some talk earlier in the week that people weren't quite as stoked about this year's NBN, and that theory was blown to smithereens by the hundreds of people at The Belcourt last night. Seriously, I never ever, ever thought I'd get denied at an NBN show and it totally happened because I took the whole event for granted. Don't make the same mistake I did, kiddos.

Also, I'd like to thank all the kind gentlemen that offered to let me sit on their laps. I would have loved to play a two-hour game of "Finger or Boner," but I've got a bad back and it would have become very uncomfortable very quick, both literally and figuratively....

not that your theory may not be correct, but i think a lot of the crowd last night for MOWV had to do with the fact that this thing is a grass roots effort four years in the making. The Deagol Brothers have a lot of friends, and probably made a lot of friends and interested a lot of parties in the process of making this thing. So, I think a lot of that audience last night had been accumulating for some time.
this as opposed to last year, which was the first most had heard of the We Fun doc, and most of those folks probably got there early intending primarily to see Lylas and Turbo Fruits.
so yeah. that's my take. and while i'm not too sweet on the thought of this being like CMJ where i have to miss two shows waiting in line just to see one, i hope for the sake of the whole this thing is getting just that big.

Hopefully next year they can upgrade the logo. It looks like the NBN logo was made in Kid Pix (or MSFT Paint)

What's the figurative part? I don't get it

Figuratively it's an uncomfortable situation to sit in a dude's lap. Literally, it's uncomfortable to have a boner in your back.
I think that's what Maloney meant.

I definitely think the huge crowds can be attributed to the hard work by the MOWV crew, but I saw A LOT of wristbands on people. I think that there's a lot more word of mouth hype happening than I realized, and that hype is growing as I type this. Having a huge kick off event gauruntees that more people will be talking about the festival today than they would have otherwise. I personally think it was a great bit of programming on NBNs part. I don't think it would have been as batshit crazy as it was if they had they debuted at NFF. The convergence of motivated artists and good promoters is pretty much the rule this week so I feel like we're going to see this happening all over town - there's lots of potential for it to get CMJ-y.

It didn't seem like a whole lot of people stuck around for the Non-Commissioned Officers though. Maybe everyone was sleepy after the movie, but I don't think the amount of people watching the band significantly dwarfed those who showed up for Turbo Fruits or Lylas last year.
It's probably still a good idea to get to the shows you want to see on time, if not early, though. You don't want to wind up unable to see your band of choice because the place is at capacity.
The shuttles are sounding more appealing now too.

I'm bout it bout it on the shuttle tip. DUIs are dumb.

I agree with Casio. (There's a phrase I never thought I'd say.)
Judging by the number of women I saw last night who were WEARING BRAS, I think a large portion of that crowd were friends, acquaintances, and interested parties who won't be popping up at shows.
By the way, the movie gets a thumbs up.
Though certainly not without its flaws, it's unique, interesting, and often downright clever. The story and the dialogue were quirky and humorous. The visuals were absolutely beautiful. Everyone can agree that the film LOOKED absolutely stunning.
The problems I had with it were a couple of poor acting performances and some abrupt, confusing editing in a few places. A good re-edit could make a huge difference.
Admittedly, it's hard to be objective about the film. When you realize the huge effort that went into making it, you want to be nothing but supportive. This is one of those times when criticizing anything at all about a project makes you feel like a douche. So I'm happy that the film was as good as it was and there's not much to pan.
Like a hockey mom at a McCain rally, the rabid cheerleader in me longs to heap blind praise on MOWV's mottled, rotting shoulders. It represents an impressive local effort and the kind of thing I'd like to see come out of euthenashville more often.
I'm proud of them.

I enjoyed the hell out of that movie. I was surprised by the detail of the gore. Some parts were certainly not for the squeamish. I loved it.
Also, I'm sure the NBN logo was built in Adobe Illustrator. The one posted here isn't the super clean one, but regardless I agree with coming up with something new. Maybe they didn't budget the $$ for the art time it would take to make a new one?

i agree. it was a pretty impressive feat.
though, definitely not without its flaws, i agree - knowing the guys behind it and knowing personally how overwhelmingly difficult and frustrating it is to put together a great movie - i hardly consider its shortcomings worth hating on. for a first film, this is leaps and bounds over what i expected. to make a movie both this creepy and funny and never cause a disrupting shift in tone is indeed commendable.
though. i remember thinking maybe they could have released it as a prequel to the Weekend at Bernie's series.

I'm feeling really daft, but I don't see anything on the NBN site about the shuttles. Anyone have info on how often they run, what their route is, etc.? If I want to go from The End to Mercy, for example, do I have to make 10 stops in between?

Something else to keep in mind is that there were only 3 NBN events last night. There a lot more for the crowds to be spread around between over the next 3 nights.

Here is the official blurb we ran in the Music Manual:
The Official NBN Shuttles (brought to you by the Downtown Partnership) will be running between each participating venue from 7:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Thursday through Saturday (excluding Edgehill Studios and Bluebird Cafe). With one late night shuttle serving the City Hall afterparties on Fri. and Sat.
The shuttles are FREE and you'll never have to wait longer than 15 MINUTES to get on board and, more importantly, you won’t have to worry about finding a parking spot at the Exit/In. Although it is not required, the easiest way to take advantage of the shuttles will be to park at the Cannery Ballroom lot or the adjacent Cummins Station lot. The shuttles will be running to and from there throughout the evening. NOTE: You will not be able to enter the Cannery lot from the front of the venue. You will need to access the lot via Palmer Place/10th Ave S.
